Afternoon,
Are the quad shocks really necessary? I have upgraded the entire rear suspension (control arms, shocks, springs, etc) minus the quads. I see they run about $200 for the set.

some can live w/o them some need them. most threads I have read need them, you get rear wheel hop and maybe some other sloppy traits. I don't know who sells them for tha much unless you are lookng at bilstiens or koni maybe? most local store have them but i got them at my local ford dealer 94 and up to around 99 maybe don't remeber off hand mustang's work I think they where 1996 ones since that's how far back they could look, they where identical to the old rusty stock ones on my 91 and they where about $40 bucks each.

Yes they are necessary on some cars. It's hit or miss

$200/set?? Where are you looking?

Gabriels from Autozone are $25/each. They are listed under "steering dampener" in the computer

I hope I don't need them on my 81 with the 2001 drivetrain. I don't have the holes in the frame rail for them. I forgot to weld them on...and I just put gas in the tank and ran it last night. I am really nervous now to weld next to it.

Why not drill? Granted drilling the frame isn't the easiest thing in the world, but with a good drill and bit, and using some PB blaster to keep the bit cool, you should have no problem. The stock ones are drilled into the frame.

Put the quad shocks back on if you took them off or don’t have them installed.

The quad shocks are a roll of the dice. No matter what the combination of tires, control arms and shocks, some cars will wheel hop without quad shocks and some won't. There are so many variables in 28-13 year old cars with wear, misalignment and combinations of suspension components and tires that one unchanging answer won't work for everyone.

I personally would install them, and make sure they are in good shape. I do know this, that Ford is cheap. If they could have made changes in some simple component like bushings or control arm construction and saved $10, they would have done it. Multiply $10 times all the Fox body Mustangs ever made and you would be almost as rich as Donald Trump. That's a lot of $$$, and good incentive to engineer something to do away with the quad shocks.

I really want to do that. But the foxes that have them have a thick reinforcement bracket inside the frame rail. Since my car is an 81 it does not have quad shocks, nor does it have the provision for them. If I drill a hole I will have to use a sheet metal bolt. I don't think that that would last over time with squealing the tires/hitting bumps and pot holes. I can't nut and bolt it either because of the gas tank. I don't want to rub a hole in the tank where the bolt goes through.

I have welded right by the gas tank before on the car when it was empty. I know fumes is more dangerous than gasoline itself, but I was ok. I just layed wet carboard in front of the area. I might try that. Man....it still makes me nervous though.

quads are a MUST from my experience. granted i dont have any suspension stuff yet, but just putting on new ones made an incredible difference for me. went from terrible wheel hop to almost none now

Bingo.


If it was a matter of changing the bushings in the control arms, Ford would have done it. Bushings are cheap compared to entire shock units. They would have saved a lot of money. They really are there for a reason so leave them.


I'm glad to see the "quad shock can be removed" myth is starting to die.

Removed. No problems. Aftermarket shocks and uppers and lower control arms. They were old and I never put them back on when I pulled out the rear in my car and switched it with a built one we built.
