I know its common for second gear to go out, so I tried to search the forum for answers but couldn't find anything on it, so I turn to you guys. Well long story short if I drive normal and go from 1st to 2nd my car shifts smooth. If I'm pounding gears racing somebody or w/e it grinds just a tad bit. I was wondering if that was the syncronizer (sp?) or what? If so, how much would it cost to for the part and to be fixed? Thanks for the help in advance.

P.S... Also when I push down on my clutch nowadays its very stiff. Would a new clutch cable solve this problem?

Yep, sounds like synchro's....and it's very common with the T-5. They probably grind a little when the trans is cold, too.

Here is everthing you need to get that baby shifting smooth again….

"AK3 T5 Rebuild Kit Contains bearings, races, blocker rings, springs, $169
inserts, shims, thrust washers, snap rings. You
will need this stuff when you're rebuilding a "World
Class" T5 (3.35 or 2.95). Kit does not contain hard
parts like gears, sliders or shafts.

Keep in mind that kit doesn't include hard parts like gears and synchro sliders.

Synchros are more than brass blocker rings. They also include the dog teeth on the speed gear and the inner teeth on the synchro slider. If your 2nd is grinding VERY badly, the teeth ont he gear may be worn. A new 2nd gear is about $85 and a 1-2 synchro slider is $80. That's in addition to the rebuild kit.

Everyone needs to realize that sometimes the damage goes beyond what a rebuild kit covers.

I'd rather keep the T-5 and upgrade the internals to G-force spec.

Reason being you don't need to swap out a lot of parts to convert to a TKo and you can still get a tranny strong enough for up to 600HP. Also, the T-5 is a lot lighter than a tremec.

I missed 2nd last night REAL bad! and STILL burned the guy I was racing. That's not the point. When I'm just driving normally, it's hard to go into 2nd/ When I pull up to a stoplight, it's hard to go into 1st or 2nd. Surely BOTH synchros aren't going out are they? Would changing the fluid out help it shift smoother, it's feeling real notchy lately, and it used to not be that way. And I don't miss gears all the time, I've only missed 2nd once, and 3rd twice since I've had the stang. I was being stupid when I missed 2nd. Think a fluid change would help out?

1st and 2nd use the same synchronzer. It just has two sides.

The synchros are grouped like this

1-2 used the same synchronizer assembly
3-4 use the same
5th gets it's own with a wearer brass blocker ring
Reverse is unsynchronized.

It's tough to diagnose tranny problems without looking. You can try a fluid change, but i doubt that would help. My guess is it's something internal being worn down but tough to tell unless i was to look inside.
