The heads on my A code 65 Gt coup need a valve job. I have another set of heads off of a 65 289 coup that have been redone. Does anybody know if there is any difference between the 289 225 HP GT heads and the 289 200 HP heads? Where did Ford get the extra 25 HP?

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember the 225 HP was a 4bbl carb, and the 200 Hp 289 was 2bbl carb equipped. I dont think the heads were a factor on those motors as far as the extra 25HP went. Someone else here may know more on this subject.

C-code and A-code heads were identical. The K-codes were different in the screw in rocker studs and slotted (instead of round) pushrod openings. The A-code got a bump in power by the 4v carb/manifold plus a slight compression change. All three heads had the same combustion chambers, valve size, and port configuration.

Umm, I pretty sure the A code had slotted pushrod holes as well. If slotted pushrod holes means K code, then I is rich! I've got 3 sets of slotted pushrod holed 289 heads. I've always referred to the slotted pushrod holes as 4V heads.

I may be wrong tho........

sorry, you prob arent rich...not from those heads anyway :D Ford used a non-rail rocker arm setup on the 64-65 heads that use a slotted pushrod hole...but they arent K heads. K heads will have a distinctive 'cup' cast in them for the valvesprings that the others dont, plus the part # (which i cant recall now). In 66 or so Ford started with the 'rail' rockers that use the large pushrod hole...alignment is handled by the rail 'lips' on the rocker arms themselves.

The previous post is right, C and A code heads are the same. K heads only have the provisions for the mech cam, no real diff in configuration...its the fact they are 'correct' for a K code that makes them valuable.

Ahh...there it is! I was thinking for my year (late 66-67), the A & C had round holes and only the K had the slots. So the early A & C heads has slots eh? Even with rail rockers?

The slotted headed 64/65 V8 Mustangs didn't have rail rockers. The "rail" rockers came in with the round holes. Otherwise there would have been two components (slots and rails) fighting each other for the same job.

a bit off topic, but when putting new head gaskets on a 289/302 block, both 1-4 and 5-8 head gaskets cover the front water passage ways? Or does one cover the front water passage ways and the other one covers the rear passage ways to make it flow better? I have been told both ways. Does anyone know for sure, or know of a particular websight that goes into detail on this question?

The gaskets are supposed to cover the front waterways to force water to the back of the engine block, then up thru the heads. The gaskets should say 'front' somewhere on them.
