question about 87 mustang gt

i personally own a 350z, but my brother owns an 87 mustang gt. he bought it from this other guy who fixed the engine (we don't know what he did to it) and was using nitrous. the guy told my brother that he dynoed the car and it was about 350 rwhp, the car is very fast. the car however has a ****ty exhaust system, small pipes and not mandrel bent. my car's exhaust diameter i think is 2.50". i would think that his car having a bigger engine would need a 2.75" or a 3.00" diameter exhaust. my question to you is what is the best mandrel bent, straight through design cat-back system for his car?

A 2.5" dual system is PLENTY big for 350 rwhp. Many production cars (Camaros, Firebirds, new Dodge and Nissan pickups) are pushing 300-350 crank HP through SINGLE 3" systems. He's gonna pay big time for a mandrel bent system. The HP/$ factor would lean in the direction of just adding a little bigger shot of nitrous and leave the exhaust system alone.

michael, he won't be using nitrous, he's taking that out.
i'm not too familiar with his 87 mustang, can you tell me the sequence of the set up of this car from the headers?..ie cat, y pipe or x pipe, silencer.

Stock in 87 they came with "shorty" headers, 2.25" head pipes, cats on each side, then an "H" connector, then dual mufflers, dual tailpipes. I misunderstood your post - thought you meant HE had a 2.5" exhaust. A set of long tube headers, and a good 2.5" system for his will improve things -- no need to go any bigger than that unless he's gonna be making a BUNCH more power. Unless he's gonna take it up over 280-290HP, replacing the stock shorties with aftermarket shorties won't help much. The long tubes however will make a big difference in the low and mid rpm range.

ok, i've been looking at the magnaflow 2.5" mandrel bent cat-back, and the magnaflow 2.5" x-pipe..what do you think?
why do non of the mufflers come with a straight through design?..does it matter if its a x-pipe or a h-pipe?..and what long tube headers do you recommend?

Magnaflow makes a straight through design - I have a 3" in/out on my car as we speak. And it will soon be off and for sale. Many schools of thought on H vs. X - some like flow characteristics of the X better. My systems single (Y pipe) so the Stangers will have to tell you what they think. On long tubes, again - ask the Stangers. To put long tubes on mine would require having them custom made - beyond the scope of this course. The Stangers should be able to give you some guidance.

Im pretty sure dynomax race bullets are a straight through design. look into them.... as for the magnaflow system, thats fine. I have about 120 dollars invested in my whole exhaust system (see sig) I installed myself, and scored some sweet deals. The diff between X and H is the X will have a more raspy tone and allitle more high pitched. H wont be as raspy and will have a deaper tone... It does not matter if it's an X or H pipe, The X makes a tad bit more power but not much more. It's really personal pref. on tone. Maybe someone can help you out on the long tube header boat....

does magnaflow make headers? if not, than what long tube headers do you recommend that's stainless steel w/ a 2 1/2" collector?...because i'm leaning more towards a long tube header with a h or x and cat to go with it, and a straight through muffler cat-back system..all stainless steel, mandrel bent and 2.5".
for the cat-back i'm looking at the magnaflow, but i don't know if they make a h or x pipe that would go with a long tube header.

Papo, Magnaflows are straight through and so are Dynomax "Race Bullets" and "Ultra Flos" but the Dynomax "Super Turbos" are not. There are other companies out there with straight through but I dunno which ones off hand.

IndyBlk was right about the X vs H thing. Go to www.MustangExhaust.com and listen to sound clips of both with similar catbacks. My suggestion is the MAC "Prochamber" which is kinda a H and X hybrid. Kinda gives you the best of both worlds.

I'm not sure about LT headers but I've heard good things about BBK, MAC and Hooker.
