Question about Exhaust Dumps??

If I'm correct cars with dumps on their mufflers don't run tailpipes...??? just dumps exhaust right down out of the mufflers... is this a good situation?? How much louder does it make it... is it good for flow?? Would any of you recommend not doing this... or is it ok. I have a little issue... I am in the process of upgrading my exhaust... and I thought it would be best to start from the headers and move my way back.. so I got bbk equal lengths... next I have a pro chamber on the way which is 2 1/2 inch. Will I have a problem bolting my crappy cat back up... if it's 2 1/4. just original with glass packs.. I like the borla exhaust stainless steel system but I have to raise a good 700 dollars for that.. I think I actually may be able to get it a lot cheeper just by piecing it together... eg. buying stainless steel flow tubes from mustangs unlimited for about 50 bucks... (u know the pipes that go before the mufflers but after the mid pipe) then if I just pick up the mufflers I want... lets say borla... Oh another quick question.... the borla mufflers I am looking at have 2 1/2 inch inputs and 3" outputs... anyone have a problem fitting 3" tail pipes?? I think I can get stainless steel tailpipes for about 110. So 110 plus the 50 flow tubes puts me at 160us with then I'll just keep an eye on ebay. Any input would be great... the cat back exhaust kits are so expensive... has anyone gone that route of just piecing the system...seems like a cheaper way to go.

Well this is just my 2 cents but noonw under about 650hp should need 3inch exhaust they are just slowing down the flow and hurting torque.
If ya run tailpipes you will have just a small amount of torque in the midrange and yes dumbs are VERY loud and usally have a drone sound while cruising which can be very anoying after a while of driving ...when ya run dump most pep's take off tail pipes unless they leave them for looks

yes, dumping exhaust is not running tail pipes, hence, DUMPING the tailpipes. there are no real pro's or con's performance wise, but it'll make your car sound louder due to the exhaust echoing off the undercarriage of the car and ground. the downside, as smallstang said is this also causes drone and stinky exhaust smell in your car. if you're wanting a loud car, dont be under the impression that running tailpipes will "quiet" your car. Tails will make your car seem quieter but again, that's because the exhaust note is directed straight back. Also tailpipes, "clean up" the sound more than quiet it. my car is dumped but i have dummy 2.5" tailpipes hung for looks. when i can afford a new set of tailpipes, i'm gonna re-hook them up. also, unless your car says chevy 1500 on the side and your vin reads 1978, get rid of those glasspacks quick! there are a lot of guys on here running 3" tails, ask around i'm sure there are plenty that would be more than happy to pic whore for you. what smallstang says about exhaust diameter is true, but that goes mostly for the midpipe. 3" tails won't really hurt.

thanks guys... my old mufflers were toast... and had to replace them with something so got the cheap 19.99 glass packs.. I actually just made a offer for the pro chamber but don't think he is going to accept. Only have about 265US.. so trying to decide what to do first.. My exhaust is leaking up near the flange where the h bolts up to the headers... so that's why I am leaning towards the pro chamber before worrying about the cat back... do u think I should hold off on it.. other modifications I am looking at other than exhaust is getting a fan controller for my mark 8 fan.. runs all the time.. but I just have a 2 row rad.. so it seems to sit at half way in temp.. so I don't think that is a priority.. the exhaust leak is what really gets to me.. other than that was thinking about getting a chassis stiffening kit that comes with the subframes and the two other braces from mustangs unlimited... Do you guys think I'm smart getting the mid pipe first... ??

i say fix whats broke first. pro chambers are nice but are pretty costly, as you already know. Personally i'd just spend 125$ and get a regular ol' mandrel bent H or X pipe. that'll save you some money to put into something else that's needed/wanted...such as mufflers.

u know I was just thinking the same thing... listened to some sound clips and I don't really mind the sound of x pipes.. there is one I am looking at www.mustangsunlimited.com under x pipes its on the second page... its a pacesetter o/r x pipe that is in separate pieces seems like it would be easier to bolt up... and its 120 dollars cheaper... now I can get that fan controller too!!! sweet! I agree i have a hpipe but i love the sound of x pipes better raspier sound

ordered a x pipe today.. so no turning back.. and just bought a control unit for my mark 8 fan.. (spal) say's it can run off a original temp gauge.. so that's great.. we'll see how it goes.. I can't put the new x on until I get my emissions test.. then I'm good for two years.. will have to store the original some place.. for the next test.. I guess the next think is cat back.. have to raise some funds.. lol.. with school!!! so one thing at a time.. hopefully it clears up the exhaust leak!!!

I love the sound of the borla exhaust but.. that's just crazy expensive!!
