Question about open headers/exhaust

I put a cutout on my car after the y-pipe right behind the transmisison. I was on the highway and there was no one around so I opened it up for a little bit to have some fun. I noticed when I let off the gas, there is a LOT of popping. It sounds like someone is shooting an m1 garand off under my car. With stock manifolds, is a lot of popping to be expected? Or is this a sign that I am running a bit rich.


At least im not shooting blue nawwssss flames, right?

thats what exhaust leaks do, they pop. Get used to it or ditch the cutout.

As a side note, advancing the timing will reduce the popping, but you may already be at the max timing for your setup.

Oh, I love the popping. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt running rich or anything. On a side note, I went through a dark tunnel and my buddy said that some of the popping spat some really brief flame. This means fun time at night

Yeah, its just bits of unburt fuel/air that needs a little more air to burn. When it gets to the air it pops. Can happen with a leak or with open pipes like that.

This happened on my car once. In my case it was the float level in the rear that was too high and gas would spill over when I backed off. I set the level lower and it stopped.
Alot of FI motors do it also without a full exaust.

Mine would shoot blue flames. I had side pipe back then and I would catch it at night.
