In the NHRA rulebook it says any convertible running 13.99 or quicker needs to have a roll bar. A 99-2004 gt with mild bolt-ons or a stock 05 gt could run that and I see them running from time to time at the local drag strip. So at what point do they require you to put the roll bar in?

The point where your local strip wants you to have one in, your reading from the NHRA Handbook and in order to be classed for racing under their rules you need one.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that they lowered the time to 13.5 for modified verts. and 11.5 if the vert is stock.

If the track is NHRA sanctioned they have no choice but to enforce the rules at all times, not "when they want you to have one in".

http://www.nhra.com/2004/news/November/110102.html
Beginning Jan. 1, 2005, a roll bar and an SFI 16.1 driver-restraint system will be mandatory on any vehicle running 11.49 or quicker and for convertibles running 13.49 or quicker.

the pure stock class started last year which allows all completely stock cars...no drag radials or any bolt-ons. to run as fast as 11.49 without any safety equipment installed on the car...this includes convertibles
