question about timing and supercarger? HELP

Hi there I have a 95 5,0 with vortech sq2 supercharger and I am wondering about the timing I checked the timing and it was 36° @ 3000rpm and then I changed it down to 10°and the power went down the drain! Why is this? So I went a little crazy and set the timing at 38° @ 3000rpm and the power is amazing ! Taka a look

also I have msd boostcontroller and I am wondering .. I tried it in the garage with a timing gun and It did nothing... No matter if the button was @ 0 or @ 3 id did not show anything on the timing gun... Just the 38° no matter what I did to the button. Is this normal? does the motor have do be under pressure to get the vac up? or how does this work?
 
How did u verify this timing? You cant just revv it up to 3000 rpm and look at the balancer. That is normal timing if you are driving at part throttle. The car uses your TPS sensor and other input to verify WOT and then it adjusts to its WOT timing scale. Is your EEC stock? If it is and your base timing is at 10 degrees, then at WOT it goes as follows

3000- 22 degrees
4000- 24 degrees
5000- 25 degrees

If you advance your base timing to say 12 degrees then add two degrees to those values.
 
ok. Base timing is what? So if the car is running 38° @ 3000rpm's what is that? Danger of damage to the motor? works more or less than on the timing that is "correct" 10°

How do I adjust the timing to 10° base?

Please Idiot proof info if you possibly can. Dont wanna mess around with the timing not knowingwhat im doing to it. Is it normal NOT to see any diff on the boostcontroller if I just rev it up to 3-4000rpm?
 
Ok well im asuming you have a timing light. If your car is at 38 degrees at part throttle that is normal, putting it to 10 degrees at part throttle is wayyy too low. You need to just let the car idle, and then go over to the air box area and pull out the spout connector(it looks like a little square grey plug), that is what allows the computer to control the timing. SO with the car at idle with the spout connector out you can check the base timing, and set it accordingly(stock is 10). But to be honest im not sure what kind of timing u are gonna want for your supercharged car, maybe some SC guys can chime in with that.
 
The MSD will only retard timing when it sees boost, so in other words reving in your driveway = no boost = MSD boost retard not kicking on.

My buddy with a Vortech on his '95 has his base set to 10 degrees, and the MSD set to 3/4. That's with a safe tune however, so be careful and listen for detonation. Too much timing on a blown car can be real bad.
 
Id set the base at 10 degrees with 1 on the MSD knob. Run that until you can get it dynoed. I run 12 degrees base in mine with 1 degree of retard per pound, which figures out to be 17 degrees total timing under boost and at WOT.

You need to adjust the timing with the spout out and at idle. Running the engine to 3000 and checking it doesnt really work on an EFI car like it does a carbed one.
 
I disconnectet the spout connector and used the timing light again.. It was @ 5° then I turned it off and loosened the bolt on the disp and turned it on again and changed the timing to 10° @ idle. Turned the car off and connected the spout connector and set the boost controller to 1° per pund and it works about the same.... I cant feel the diffrence. But Hey atleast the timing is right now :) Thanks guys
 
FYI on the BTM box. If it is not boost calibrated right it can malfunction and not pull the timing. You should run a vacuum test on it if you have any problems with itdown the road when boosting. Did you re-check the timing with the spout out after you turned off the car and tightened down the bolt. It can vibrate a few degree's one way before the bolt is all the way tight. I'd pull the spout and re-check it again for assurance. Get yourself a $300 methanol kit from Snow and a 7qt trunk resivoir and you'll be able to jack up the timing. I ran 30* WOT timing with the methanol with 12#'s last year.
