Question about timing and timing light that I bought from Summit?

I received my timing light from Summit (below)...

I got it...and thought there was something you plug into around the distributor...but alls I got was two battery cable type ends (opposite end plugs into timing light) and a clip to go on the #1 spark plug wire...is that all you need?

yes, that is all you need. you have to unplug the little module from the distributor to set base timing.

Sorry I was just getting paranoid thinking I got the wrong one

Let me ask another dumb question...what does pointing the timing light down at the harmonic balancer timing marks do...is it just to illuminate the marks better...how do you tell your at 10* timing for example by using that light?

with the car off use something that will show up really well on the balancer, like white out and mark the 10* mark. you might have to bump the engine over without starting it to get at it, and than mark where you want your timing at....start the car with the plug out and shine the light at the balancer. it will light up everytime cylinder 1 fires....now, turn the distributor (not sure which way) until the light is flashing on the second mark you made

Mark the 0* mark on the balancer, then use the light's adjustment dial to find out what your timing is already set to. Doing it this way makes it easier to adjust your timing up or down.
