question about traction lock rear axel

Technically, no -- a posi is a GM limited slip, Trac-Lok is a Ford limited slip. Same idea, but you don't have GM parts in your car. To otherwise answer your question -- all cars like yours came from the factory with limited slip rear ends.

Adam, you are right on. im too lazy to even correct folks.
and thanks for the info on the stang LSD's; i get the cars confused. i knew that open diff's were somewhat common on 4th gen camaros (G/F's car), but could not remember on stangs (though now that i think about it, i dont remember ever hearing someone not having one on a fox chassis with a 5.0).

Really depends on what type of driving you do. Most people are happy with some 3.55 or some 3.73s.
Kevin

final drive i have already decided on 3:73 all the way. what i am refering to is the actual switch from limited slip to positive. what all parts are needed. just a new differential or what. not real sharp on rear ends.

im not real sure what you are talkin about with the trac lock vs 'positive' stuff. if you want to rebuild your existing limited slipper, get a rebuild kit. they are 50 bucks-ish. some like to pack the clutches tighter - personal preference on that.

i guess im confused with the 'positive' part of your question - do you mean a locker or something (i had the feeling you wanted something more than a limited slip rear end). as i recall, 'posi' is short for posi-traction, so im confused with your 'positive' term i guess.......:-)

yeah posi, positive whatever your preference for calling it is. both mean the same to me. the stock (limited slip) switches in between tires for best traction. if i am not mistaken. what i am refering to is both wheels turning at all times, not just when on fails to acquire traction. maybe i have been misinformed on how this works.

Posi and trac-lok are limited slip. Both tires will spin from a stand still. When turning they allow one wheel to spin a little slower. There is a clutch pack that allows this. If you goose it in a turn both wheels will have power applied to them.

If you want to move up from a limited slip then a locker is what you want. It uses gears (kinda like a) ratchet instead of the clutch pack and chatters when the car goes around turns. Heavier Duty then the the limited slip because it uses gears.

Next is a spool. Solid and both wheels spin the same speed all the time.

If any of this is off please correct it.

Chris, i thought you were going for a locker, but was not sure. yep, that be it. remember the car will be useless except at the track. inside wheel in a turn turns slower - unless it cant.

as i recall, some folks use pumpkin fluid for open diffs to stiffen up the trac lok. it is at a cost of clutches needing more frequent replacement, but it works well (reportedly, mostly in auto X stuff i have read).

Useless is an awfully strong word -- there are alot of people who run lockers and spools on the street -- although it's not very easy in "non-dry" weather. :)

point taken. i am willing to make some compromises, but that is one i would not do. so you're right - my opinion took over in that statement. my bad. :nice:

you are correct. i remember the locker in my old truck and the rough cornering, although i questioned the reason. i blamed it on the truck itself (lifted w/35s) which i sure did not help. you input has been more than helpful i think i will probably stay away from that. my car without a doubt is street and will doubtfully ever be a every weekend warrior. while this is up, how does the stock diff compare to say a Eaton or Auburn. i notice that most people simply rebuild, just was not sure if that was for monetary purposes or not.

thanks again so much.
