Question about tranny...

So i have an 03 cobra bone stock. Got it a few days ago. I noticed that after i put clutch in and put it into 1st gear. I hear some kind of pop in the back. It almost does it everytime. Sometimes it does it in second gear. Does anyone know whats goin on. Is this normal? Also another question. I know this is very dumb but i can't seem to find the tranny dipstick. I also have an '02 gt auto and i know that in that one the tranny dipstick is on the passenger side next to the heads in the back and the lid is in bright yellow and says transmission fluid but can't find it in the cobra.
 
Well, the "pop" in the back you're hearing is something each and everyone of us has probably wondered about. Like it or not, in my own opinion, it's just one of the beauties of the cobra drivetrain. I've heard hundreds of others with the same problem. My 03 has it to.

As for the dipstick, manual transmissions don't have dipsticks. As far as I know, there is a little sight plug in the side of the transmission. You have to be under the car while it is level and remove the plug. The fluid level should be just below the plug. Kind of like checking the fluid in the rear end of your car.

Thanks. Yeah there's a local tuner i took it to and he checked it out and he said that "pop" is normal cause he has worked on many terminators but i just wanted to double check with you guys. And about the dipstick. It makes since. It's my first manual tranny car so i was clueless. Thanks alot. Another question. Off topic. When you first got your termy did your engine feel a lil extra hot after driving it? Even if you didnt drive it hard?
 
Pop? When putting the car in gear? Noise comes from the rear end? Never heard of such a thing in an '03. Please clarify the conditions in which this is happening. You're moving or sitting still? Going straight or around a corner at a slight incline?

It does do it when your going forward or around a corner or is doesn't? I was worried about a "clunk" when I put my car in gear right after I bought it and the ford dealer service manager told me it was something that they all had. My car has a clunk, but only when putting it in gear while stopped. There has to be some slack somewhere in the driveline. If it happens while cornering and such, we must be talking about 2 different noises.
 
Im sorry. I typed it wrong. I havent heard the clunk when cornering is what i meant to say. But when at a dead stop and i put it into gear i hear a clunk in the back. I started noticing this right after i took it home from the dealer and was worried it wasnt normal until someone from a local performance shop told me this is normal in terminators not to worry. Uncle Meat seems to think this isn't normal though. :( I dont like the shifter to much. Its kinda hard. And the clutch feels pretty soft. I know the first two mods are gonna probably be a shifter and a clutch.
 
Ok, we are talking about the same noise. Like I said, mine has it to. I'm sure uncle meat just didn't understang what noise we were talking about. He is usually the one whose advise I consider first.

Anyway, as for a shifter... Go MGW!!! There is no better shifter on the market. Just got mine a couple months ago and it is great. No more missed shifts.
As far as clutch, I would keep the stock one. Just add a viore quadrant and firewall adjuster. Just got those as well, and adjustments have never been easier. You can make the clutch engage and disengage where you want it to. Also, may take away some of the clunk your hearing. Part of my clunk went away when I got my clutch to be disengaged a little further from the floor.

Mine has a big old CLUNK when I slam it into first while stopped.

Be sure and get the Fiore firewall adjuster and quadrant like advised above.

Yes a lot of heat comes through the firewall and you can really feel it sometimes.

Congrats on your new Cobra, be sure and drive it like you stole it :)
 
I'll post some pics as soon as i get the chance. I dont have a camera but will barrow one from a friend. As far as the shifter i've hear a 5.0 proshifter and the MGW. Which is better? And as far as the clutch. Is it normal for it to feel a little soft? I've driven honda's, acura's and there clutch doesnt feel so soft and there shifts are much crisper and smoother then a stock cobra.
 
Mine doesn't make any noise when putting it into gear while stopped. Then again I do have a firewall adjuster which may be allowing the clutch to disengage further than normal. I imagine if the clutch was not fully disengaged it could clunk when putting it in gear. I just don't remember ever hearing about this problem before? I know there's a lot of play in the drive train and it clunks a lot when getting on and off the gas, but that's just the slack in the drive line. :shrug:

U.M, I'd bet the firewall adjuster is what keeps you from hearing the clunk. Now that you mention it, I don't recall hearing mine anymore since I had the Fiore adjuster installed.

As far as the shifter goes, in my honest opinion, the MGW is the only way to go. Some people will give you other ideas and I can't speak for everyone, but I love my MGW.

The shifter and the clutch adjuster and quadrant are good mods. Then, PULLEY THAT THING!!!

Just ask Uncle Meat about a pullied cobra. He'll tell ya. Actually, he'll say "so, you're already crossing over to the dark side" and post a pic of Darth Vader. It's all good though. His extended warranty is almost up and it won't be long till he'll be joining us here on the "dark side". Ain't that right UM?

I'm surprised that you thing a honda clutch is softer. I know mine in my cobra is soft, but a civic is no harder. They don't even use a cable, clutch is hydraulic, so there isn't much effort. And a Civic shifter is definitely not cripser than a Mustang. I drove my friend's Civ and another friend's accord. Those shifters feel like such crap, because they use a cable. You feel apart from the transmissions, as is with the clutch. When you go with a shifter in the Mustang, you'll see the difference. I don't think it's what you're envisioning. You're going to get some notchiness and zero slop, which I think is a good thing, since you'll always know which gear it is in. You're also going to get a near automatic shift from 2nd to 3rd and very short shifts. If you get anything other than the MGW, you'll get increased noise and vibration through the shifter handle and base.
 
I had a friend with an 02 acura rsx type s and a friend with an 03 accord both 5 speed manuals and i drove both and i just felt the clutch in those was a little harder i dont know the tecnical reason for this and also the shifts where a lot softer. My friend with the acura would sometimes joke while he'd be driving about how he could shift with just one finger on the shifter because of how smooth it was and when i went to test drive the cobra he came along to test drive it since he is a way better driver then i am. He was in love with the car and said he is considiring getting one himself but he also thought the gears are a little harder to put in. Don't get me wrong. Im not saying that a honda or acura are better. Im a muscle car guy. And im not complaining. I was just curious if it was normal in the 03-04 cobra's for the gears to be a little hard to put in and if the clutch was supposed to be a lil to soft. I know now that im leaning toward the MGW shifter as the first mod.
 
In my experience, the clutches in the Hondas have been softer. Yes, it is a tad harder to put a Mustang in gear, but nothing out of the ordinary. It feels exactly as a sports car should feel. A Mustang's shifter is directly above the transmission so you feel in-tune with the car. On most Honda's the transmission is under the hood and the shifter is connected via cables. To me, they feel sloppy and not as positive as a Mustang. Others will give you their opinions.
 
The filler hole is on the top of the transmission. If you take off the shifter boot maybe you can access it. You could put a dipstick of some kind in there to see where you're at. Hope this helps. Good luck with your other issue.
