I hate to bring up anything remotely similiar to the Trickflow vs AFR debate but hear me out real quick. Originally I wanted AFR 165s. Then I decided with nitrous and stroker plans in the future I should just go with AFR 185s, but right now I have stock pistons and don't want to have to notch them or rebuild my motor that only has 7000 miles on it. So would twisted wedge heads be perfect based on what I have heard that they are between an AFR165 and 185, work with stock pistons, and have a lot of room to grow regarding porting? I am just making sure my logic isn't way off before I waste a bunch of money. And while I have a thread open does anyone think that I could hit 11's with my current set-up plus Twisted wedge heads w/1.7RRs and some savvy driving? Thanks for any replies.

with the addition of the twisted wedge heads i suggest you swap your e-cam out as well to the trick flow stage 1 cam. with the addtion of those two and some tuning you will see some more power added and get you closer to the 300whp mark. as for 11's.... your going to need to put down a very good 60ft time. around a 1.6 and drive the hell out of the car. then i think you will only see a 12.3-12.4. i dont think that 11's will be possible without something like weight reduction or mr nitrous.

Going from an E7 head to a twisted wedge I certainly hope would get me faster than 2 or 3 tenths in the 1/4 mile!! Would I really gain that much going from an E-303to a trickflow stage one?...I know the trickflow is better but they are pretty similiar cams aren't they?

the twisted wedge heads are great set of heads.. and now you can buy them already ported.. 185cc or 205cc as for the e-cam and the stage 1 being close.. when it comes to cams.. close is still way different.. the e-cam is a signle pattern cam.. being 220@.50int220@.50exh .498.498 lift while the the trick flow cams are designed to match the heads.. the stage one being 221@50int225@50exh .499/.510 lift on a 112.. i would say the stage one would be a better cam suited to the mods of your car

Well I hadn't considered changing the cam till I stroke my motor and get a custom cam but heck why not. Does anyone know if twisted wedge + stage one + 1.7s will clear stock pistons? I don't know if the extra duration from the stage one over the E cam is good or bad regarding clearance...
O...and do I have to get new lifters if I change the cam??
Thanks for the replies guys

P.S. The ported TW 185s look pretty sweet but at almost $1900 for a set they are a little out of the good 'ol price range and the 205s are a little out of my engine's breathing capacity as well as the price range.

TFS's are a great head for growing. The valves being offset allows the use of a 2.02 valve with a stock piston, considering a mild cam. I got a set of TW's used, with RR's, track heat springs, and pushrods for $900. Since I am going with a very agressive setup, I will either have them ported or just sell them to buy other heads, whichever is cheaper.

are new lifters needed for a new cam or does it not matter?

I haven't read all the posts but I know AFR and TFS both make good stuff. No matter what you do the Twisted wedge has a more efficient chamber design. I was lucky enough to catch Rick Anderson on the phone one day and he gave me an earfull about it. To sum it up- flow ain't everything.

As for 11's, its possible but not likely. I have a Lighting now as well and am a member of a Lightning board too. Those guys had some great insight on why cars seem to go faster down south and back east. Here in the west our weather is not as condusive to good et's and if that isn't bad enough- the rest of the Country has better gas. Going by your sig your car runs good as is. You may find that bolting on a lot of happy junk isn't going to help you as much as you'd of thought. In any event good luck!

HA! aint that the friggin truth!!!! But its only CA and AZ, up here in WA (and OR) we get better gas and the premium is 92... when I drove thru CA and AZ on my way up here from NM my car was pinging on the "premium" 91 ( I even took ignition timing out at a rest stop, still didnt stop it though), then I got to OR, put in some Shell 92, viola! No more detonation.

You need to go to AFR's website and read MM&FF's Ultimate Guide to Cylinder Heads, they've got it posted there. I was surprised, they tested the TW in the 180cc head class even though it only measured 168cc! So they ended up testing the TW against the 185 instead of the 165... which wasn't fair in my opinion. In any case, read parts I-IV to get the lowdown on the TW vs. AFR thing... You'll see the AFR's are over-rated!!!

Yea...damn 91 octane....i don't understand why in AZ they give us crap gas. Oh well...
Sounds like TW is a good way to go. Anymore input on cam would be cool...it looks like I stand to gain a little with a TF stage one over the E-cam but why stop there? could I step up to stage II cam? I'm not trying to fall victim to bigger is better syndrome I'm just curious. Also, should I get new lifters...the reason I ask is someone told me if I get a new cam I need new lifters because the lobes wear them down or something...i don't know thats why I'm asking...

With your ideas (properly outlined in your first post) I would go with the TW's in this case like you thought.

You will probably gain about 3 tenths from the heads. 30hp as a rough estimate (if that). You won't gain much going from the e-cam to TFS1 cam but it is cheap and you will see a gain. A custom cam would be more ideal.

IMO the t/w heads and the stage 1 cam will make a nice combo as they were designed for each other. The e-cam seems to work well with the ported E7's and GT40 heads. You should always check PTV with any cam change especially with lift over .500 (TFS = .499 & .510). Also the t/w head's 2.02 valves work with stock pistons when using the stock cam. As for lifters its good ins. and only $120.00 from summit. The t/w are going to require longer pushrods and stud mounted rr's.

Does anyone know if the reliefs are any bigger or smaller on a stock forged piston than the stock hyperuetectic piston?

Don't waste your time changing from an E to a stage I. Not even worth the timing cover gasket cost.

With that said. My buddy who loves TW's and owns a shop, has built many cars with stock shortblocks, that have been in the 11's NA.

All cars have custom cams (which is what i think you should do), and the TW's all are valve jobbed, bowls cleaned up, and spring seat pressure set. (he does this with all heads, regardless of whether you want it or not), says it cuts down on warranty labor work.
adds about $400 to the cost though.

I believe the quickest H/c/i NA street car with a stock shortblock, went 116 mph in quarter. And then there is a dozen guys that went between 112-115mph.

Just a note, my custom cam needed my pistons to be notched.
