question about wheels

I think my summer project just got cancelled. :bang: :bang: :bang:

I am Converting to front disk brakes.

Current wheels are 14 inch (too small for the disk brakes)

How do I get a set of 4 wheels where the front wheels fit the discs and the back fit the old drums?

Do I need to get larger rear drums brakes as well?

the kit off discbrakeswap.com

I think it is the granada swap.

Did the Granada have wheels w/ a larger hub hole?
Where do I find these wheels?
Where do I find wheels where the front two wheels have larger hole then the rear?
And must I carry two spares?

I am thinking the discbrakeswap.com swap might have been a bad idea

You made a good purchase going with discbrakeswap.com.
Any aftermarket rim is designed to work with the larger hub, you're worring a lot over nothing. Besides, even if you have rims that doesn't clear the hub the rotor can be turned down to clear.

I recommend looking for a set of 15x7 rims. Ideally backspacing will be 4.0 to 4.25 for best tire clearance. My $.02

I guess my question boils down to this. If I buy aftermarket wheels. Say I get 16's . They should be designed to fit the larger roter that the new disc brakes use.

That takes care of the front of the car. Now these new wheels will not fit on the rear because the hub hole will be too large.

I called dallasmustang and the tech guy said he couldn't help me. He wasn't aware of a rear drum hub that you can buy that is the same size as the Granada disc rotor hub.

What do I need to purchase to get the rear to accept the same size wheel as the front w/ the new rotors?

OK, so just to follow up,

That protrusion which is only about a quarter inch.... The wheel does not need to fit around that snugly?

I had assumed that like the front wheels, there needed to be something more than just the lug nuts to secure the wheel in place.

On these early cars, the wheels were lug centric. On newer cars, that hub matters because the wheels are hub centric. On newer cars, that hub is larger.

You're ok.

you also don't need a 15" wheel. a 14" for a later model disc brake car will work just fine. the problem you are having is only because the hub is larger and maybe, just maybe, you have a wheel designed for drum brakes which have a shallower center that won't clear the disc brake caliper. all granada's had 14" wheels from the factory.

you only need 1 spare tire but it has to clear the granada's hub or you can have the hub turned down to fit the stock wheel's center hole.

The problem is the drop center on the factory 14" wheel. The center of the wheel will hit the caliper.

The hub is a red herrring, it's a non-issue.

I think the stock size is 14x5.5. The car will have better grip with the wider wheel that clears the caliper even if you don't change the tire size.

The Granada wheel will work fine if you can find some. They won't cost you much if you do.

on pre-73 cars with granada brakes the hub is most definietly an issue. the hub snout is bigger in diameter on the granada (and maverick) brakes than the early models and the wheel phyiscally won't fit over it. ever tried to put a 68-69 GT wheel on a maverick or granada rotor? they won't fit over the hub snout.

No. Can't say I have.

Ever try to put a stock '65 steel wheel over a Granada rotor? The drop center of the wheel hits the caliper. It won't turn.

Same problem. Neither of them will work!

I wrote that a Granada wheel will fit on anything. You are saying that not anything will fit on a Granada conversion. I agree with that. We don't disagree anywhere on this thread.........so your continued attitude towards me is confusing.

no attitude bud. i simply want to make everyone aware that if they use a granada brake kit on any 65-73 stang their stock wheels, even if they are disc brake wheel won't fit over the rotor snout. 65-67 styled steel wheels, 68/69 GT wheels and standard steel wheels will not physically fit over the rotor snout therefore they won't seat against the hub, the only exception would be the magnum 500 wheels and i've been told that even the original early 14" mag 500's won't fit either.

the point is that if someone wants to do the granada conversion and they also want to keep their stock styled steel or GT wheels they will have to modify either the wheel or snout on the granada rotor, that's all.

basically, i was trying to clarify that, absolutely no attitude meant towards you

I have to say that you can "make them fit"; but you won't like the outcome! Once had to swap both passenger-side tires on my then-girlfriend's '76 Gremlin (same bolt pattern) at 11:30 PM on a Sunday night - don't ask why, I can say that I didn't cause it. Used her spare and the one for my 1973 Gran Torino. If I remember that night 26 years ago; I used the Gremlin spare up front, and the Torino spare on the rear drum. After getting both original tires replaced (destroyed sidewalls); I spent 4 hours getting that Ford wheel off the back of the AMC; and then had to buy a new wheel for my car.

That 1/4" lip may not matter if the hole is over-sized; but it can play Holy H-E-double hockey sticks if the reverse is true.

Just did the swap from Dennis, worked out great and I love the brakes and slotted rotors. I had 14 inch gt rims and def. did not fit but because of the guys here on the thread I ordered a 15 by 7 rim for the front and 15 by 8 in the rear and they fit great and look great with no issues. Take the advice of the guys here, they know what they are talking about. You will like the brakes but go with a new rim and tire combo, get rid of the 14's! just my 2 cents :D
