Question - dropping the oil pan

I think I need to put a new gasket in for the oil pan. I am dripping a good amount of oil.

The leak started after I installed a new balancer (OEM one separated). When the stock balancer gave way, the outer ring road down onto the front of the motor (timing cover and oil pan I think).

So when I first saw the leak, I thought it was because I forgot to silicone the bolt and washer. I pulled the bolt back out, and sealed that up. Still leaks.

I'm guessing its from the oil pan to block seal.

So with that story, I am wondering how big a job it is to drop the oil pan and put a fresh seal on there. Any thoughts or suggestions?

You can "snake" the old gasket out (oil pick ups in the way) and snake the new one in. Houst the engine up a bit to give you more room to play with.

Question did you RTV the Key on the crank and on the balaner key way or just the washer and bolt??

Actually, I had the shop do it while they were looking for my electrical short. So I guess I should start there.

I checked the Haynes manual and see that pulling the pan completely is a major job. So I'll be taking a closer look to try to find the source of the issue before going down that road.

did you check the seal on the front of the timing chain cover? sounds like that could be whats leaking

yeah, it could be the front main seal leaking, and you will just have to yank the water pump/timing cover and replace it. No biggie.

It's not dumping that much oil, just making a mess. I'll pull it apart next weekend.
