If you were to start getting into mustangs now would you still pick a fox or would you lean to a newer mustang?

I'd actually get an older one. A 68 or a 69 with a big block in it.

Would depend on budget (honestly).

My first Mustang was a fox and my current Mustang is a fox (both emerald green '92's).

Guess it depends on what you want/need it for. Fox's are inexpensive, can be made very fast and are easy to work on.

The new generation does pretty decently right off the showroom floor and is a much better built/performing car. But you're also dropping close to $30k.

Yeah, depends on what you want and what you have to spend.

A new one is great.....reliable....comfy....and has great potential but is obviously gonna cost you up front.

A fox....cheaper....easy to find parts and play with.

I had an 04 a few years back with very low miles that I paid about 18k for....it was nice and comfy and stuff.

Then I sold her and bought my current fox about a year ago and have about $5500 into it since I bought someone elses project that they spent a lot of money on....and I'm a happy mofo right now. I have a car that handles like a race car.....looks nearly new....and has lots of power. But its my toy and not my daily driver.

If I wanted a daily driver....go newer.

To me there is nothing like a Fox. Its a raw, all business kind of car.

That being said, I would not suggestion one if you are going to only have 1 vehicle. Anytime you are buying a 15-20 year old car, you have to expect a certain amount of tinkering and maintenance that goes along with it. Not to mention downtime for modding

The modulars I have owned have been very solid and reliable and pretty fun after some bolt ons. I have had more fun with my foxes, although they have been more work too. Foxes just have more of that gritty, no frills, tire burner feel to them though that I like. The brakes suck though and subframe connectors are a must have.

If you enjoy working on your cars, enjoy getting your hands greasy and turning some wrenches and are not afraid to learn some stuff as you go, a fox is great. They are really easy to work on and parts can be found everywhere. 99-04 Gts are getting pretty cheap nowadays too though and like I said those can be fun with a few easy bolt ons and a set of gears.

I think mostly budget and body style preference determine what you want to shop for.

If i didn't own a Mustang at all and wanted to jump back in the game, the only way I would buy a Fox 5.0 is if it was something unique or rare...like a 1993 Cobra, or a Fox Body Saleen or even an SVO maybe. I wouldn't buy a plain jane LX or GT. The onyl reason i have my Fox is because of sentimental reasons - my first car ever from back in HS. Otherwise i would have sold it and bought the Mustang i really want....

...I would buy a Mach 1...2003 or 2004 Azure Blue. I'd toss on some flowmasters, lower it, some 18" wheels, tint the windows and call it a day. Toss in some 4.10's and it would prob be fast enough to handle most of what I came across on a drive. It would have the Mach 460, A/C, COZY seats and be comfortable to drive on the highway for long distances. I wouldn't even do any more mods than that right there. I'd love it!

If i ever get the means to store a 3rd vehicle...i'mbuying a Mach 1

BTW...i owned an 2003 GT...so i have expeirence with the new edge Mustangs

Well I dont think I'll ever be able to afford anything newer than a fox - and thats just fine with me...

I started out with Mustangs back in '97 when I bought a somewhat tired but complete and rustfree 1964 1/2 hardtop - its a black on black k-code with no options but the k-code stuff. And I love it! Coolest car I've ever had.

I drove it for four years and then realized I needed something more modern and reliable as a daily driver - so I bought my fox. A totally stock '92 hatchback.
The '92 was meant as my daily driver - and my further intention was that all income would be spent on the old black one.

Things didnt turn out that way. I still got the old one, safely tucked away in my dads double garage - and I will never get rid of it, but since I bought my '92 there is where my money has been spent...
And I love it more and more.

Its very fast, its reliable, it handles quite well... I like to think so at least - and it gets better and better each year passing... it is fairly economical (actually, it is very economical compared to buying a fairly new BMW or Merc with similar performance).

And it is pretty unique over here. Exotic stuff!

I dont think I will sell this one either - so I am pretty much stuck with two Mustangs. Bliss!

My own ranking:

1: 64-66 Shelbys/K-codes - Fastbacks, hardtops and verts in that order
2: 69-70 Shelbys/Mach 1/Cobra Jets/Bosses
3: 90-92 FTW
4: 03-04 Terminators
5: 71 Boss 351/429 SCJ
6: New stuff which I will never be able to afford.

Sorry for sidetracking...

Now even if I ever should win the lottery I think I would still stick with the pre-70's Stangs - and the fox bodies.

I need a notch - a serious turbo notch. Black of course.
And a four-banger/SVO replica - which I would molest with a Cosworth engine out of a Sierra or Escort...

And yes ok I forgot... a Termi please. Any colour will do...

I've have an 05 that I bought brand new from the dealer and done several mods to. This week I just bought an 89 LX coupe and even though I love the 05 and It looks/permons like a champ. The 89 is just plain amazing. Just look at the facts. The fox platfom lasted for several years with little to no changes.

+1 on the fox not being the daily driver. If this is a car that your going to play with on the weekends, maybe drive it to work once and a while then Id look at a 89 (still has the tilt wheel but also has the mass air and 140 speedo) or maybe a nice 84 or 85.
But a fox saleen would be fun too...

I imagine most people have not owned their fox that long and probably had an option to buy a fox or something newer.

I bought my '92 in '06 because most of my teen years were in the mid '80s and early '90s. I grew up wanting a fox so bad. Finally got a new from the dealer '93 GT in Feb '94, however, had to sell it the following year due to a divorce.

i have a 93 coupe and i have had alot of fox body cars. the bad thing is alot of fox body cars are in bad shape. i have a few friends that have both and the newer cars are faster now than the fox body car was stock for stock. if u can find a good fox body its going to cost u alot of money. i have my car for sell for 9500.00 for a roller but it has a 5000.+ rear end in it. if it sell im going for a 05+ car to play with

It's been so long it's nearly impossible to imagine myself not having a Fox. To answer the question though, 03/04 Cobra all the way. That or I'd be waiting (not so patiently) to see if the rumored 400hp GT comes to light. I really like the 2010 GT but knowing that a 400hp version might be right around the corner there's no way I would buy one right now.

I would still get a fox. It was the stang of the time during my high school days and I always wanted one. It's a raw and in your face kind of car and I like that for a weekend play ride. Jumping out of the new modern cars of today and going for a ride in the fox and it's old school platform, it just has a different feel to it that the new stuff has lost.

I had an 87 gt with all the bells and whistles about 10 years ago, it drove me nuts in the winter, so traded for a truck.
Truck went bye bye (needed more work then it was worth)

I originally was looking at the 05-07's, the cost to get a v8, then try to mod it to my liking was just WAY out of my budget. It would have been around 17-20k then another 6-8k, was not happening.
SO, decided to go with what was comfortable. I knew the Foxes, parts easily avalible, so far, and to mod it up, wouldnt break the bank, Or, could be done bit by bit.
Picked up someone elses project, shipped it here, and still working on it, but it will be My vision, and affordable.
Perhaps in 10 years when the price of the newer ones goes down, ill think about it. Unless Ford fixes/changes the body style, they can keep the 10'+ models.

I doubt it, but only because my deep love for the Foxes came after I got into the Mustang scene and got close and familiar with a ton of them. From an outside perspective of not seeing much other than the cars on the road or in advertisements (when I got mine, I wasn't even a car guy at all) I'm sure I'd be getting a newer one.

That said, I wouldn't give up my Fox now for anything.

As due for the course, I must say I walked away from the foxbody once, now I'm back. I had a 4th gen camaro and I have to say it had everything my fox ever had and more... except that raw feeling you only get with a fox. That Z28 just wasn't fun to drive.

Yeah, I'd love to just go buy a brand new 2010 Mustang GT. I think when the economy gets better I might just buy a new mustang but only as a weekend cruising toy, keep it like new all the time. Let my fox be nasty... and I mean nasty as in mean lifts the front wheels on the street nasty.

In that case, i'd get a 96-98GT. The price is close to the price of a clean fox 5.0. Then do a PI swap for cheap and have 99+ GT power numbers at a cheaper price
