Question: What Kind Of Gas Do You Put In Your Pony?... Does It Matter?

Biilyfe390 why would you run 100 octane at the track? The higher the octane the less horsepoer you will make. Use as low an octane as you can without pinging for maxium hp.

2 Program chip with the performance tune set on the ragged ass edge of things. Its lean and has alot of advance so when I actually race it it will ping on 91. If I lived somewhere that had a track not surrounded by cornfields and 90+ degree temps on race days it probably would work on just premium.

Yup. Its worth 20 hp at 6000 rpm but like I said before if I lived somewhere else it probably would be ok but its just to hot and humid here.

I run Ethanol 90 Octane as much as possible.

My stang will ping slightly on 87, but runs awesome on the 90 Ethanol stuff. The fact that the 90 is the same price as the 87 only makes it better.

I run midgrade 89 octane gas. Any brand seems OK in my area. If I run 87 it pings under a load. 89 = no more pinging.

Also, since we are on the subject, my car occasionally has this kind of deep rattly sound when I accelerate hard. It almost sounds kind of like a diesel engine. Any ideas?

I buy the gas with 10% ethanol. I never buy anything else. I have found that I get better gas mileage with it. It's also better for your engine. Besides, anything to keep from putting money in the Arab's pockets is A-OK with me.

Yes, that is pinging. I'd maybe switch to a higher octane rating for awhile and see if it goes away.

93 octane BP or Chevron... my car is stock but feels crazily sluggish on 87 and pings alittle... and 89 too so I run 93...

I have 10.5:1 compression and my timing is bumped to 15 degrees. I do not ping at all with 93 octane. Price sucks but what can you do?

I use 89 octane. I used to always use 87, but my old GT would ping so I switched to 89 and it cured the problem. It seems to me that the car runs better with 89, thats just my opinion though so I may be wrong.

Pinging is also known as spark knock and detination. More correctly it is pre-ignition.

I'll simplify it.....what happens is the air/fuel mixture is sucked into the combustion chamber. As the cylinder pressure rises on the compression stroke the mixture ignites and starts to burn before the spark plug fires. This is the pre-igntion point and it has negitive impact on power production and can be very harmful to the engine. generally it only happens under a load..liek going up hill or during acceleration. Higher octane fuel resists this. But too high of octane can cause a loss of power.

Cavallo, What do you mean by the Canada tune ? I'm in Canada, does this mean I have a diffrent computer the the stangs rolling off the lots in the US of A ??
