I live in Boise Idaho and just bought a 1988 LX hatchback with 2.3L and 5 speed. I'd like to make a Saleen look alike. Did they have 5 lug rims in 1988? The car is straight and rust free and a good platform to start with. :SNSign:

First thing welcome to stangnet. Second is why are you making a 4 cyl. into a saleen look alike? Are you looking to set up a turbo 4cyl, cause that would rock.

Peace

Maybe. I'll change to motor last and do the looks first. I saw the most rad Saleen about 5 years ago when I was going to school. It was an 88/89 , black, mysterious and the best looking one I'd ever seen. Thanks for the welcome.

I owned an 88 black drop top and they are very fun cars... Only problem you will have is with the suspension... If you are going to use anything resembling the saleen, it is going to cost you alot. They were the only fox bodies that were 5 lug. Right there you should decide if you want to go this route or not. With what it is going to cost to convert, you should personalize it and give it a turbo coupe motor.

welcome, and I beleave they were 4 lug still. I could be wrong, there's a few saleen guys on here to correct me if i'm wrong. 5 lugs are an easy upgrade though. Just find a "94-95 spindles would be best", but pretty much any braking system of a 94 to 2004 mustang will bolt on your car, and make it 5 lug. I did all 03 cobra upgrades on mine. Not the cheapest but worth it. It means stop when I hit the pedel!!! there's plety of write ups on here that you can find about coverting to 5 lug.

I'll do it slow. I got it for a cheap price so I can afford to move forward. I'd definatly convert to 5 lugs. What rim size and tire combination did the Saleen use? Is there a web site with this info?

Forgetting the SVOs are we.....
and the 93 Cobra R

To get the saleen stuff is pretty easy. If I remember correctly, the Saleens simply used Lincoln MkVII rotors and an entire MkVII rear axle assembly. (They are 5 lug)

P.S. the SVO used this rear axle too.

Oh yeah and welcome to StangNet!!!:SNSign::SNSign:

Since it is not a real saleen, I would grab some 94-95 spindles and rear axle and throw some 94-up cobra brakes at it. BuyFordRacing.com has the front brakes for 309.99 including stainless lines. Then maybe top it off with a set of 18x9 saleen wheels? That would be sweet....

And check out Eibach for lowering springs. They make them for the 4 cyl.

So the MarkVII from that year had the same rear? Same width? Heavier duty? The front brakes bolt on?

The mark rear is wider than a foxbody. That is why the wheels are flush with the fenders on the svo and saleens. Other than the width, bolt pattern, and rear disc, they are the same 28 spline trac lok as a fox 5.0. Yes they blot in. I believe hat the frpp 5-lug conversion for the front is just a set of mkVII front rotors. That said, I would still go for sn95 front spindles for their increased brake choices, superior design, better steering geometry (increased ackerman), and ease of service.

Guess I'll opt for a mustang rear then. Was the Saleen body modified to fit these rear width, wide tire combinations? Can you translate frpp and sn95 and ackerman?

frpp = ford racing performance parts
sn95 = chassis code for 94-04 mustangs technically, but most people use this term for 94-98 ponys.
ackerman = the angle difference between the steering wheels in a tight turn (think outside tire scrub)

The only thing to remember is that if you want to run saleen wheels with the sn95 cobra 13" brembos, you would have to run saleen wheels off of a 94-up. If you want to run the smaller GT brakes, the 16 inch saleen wheels from a 87-93 will fit.

You will also need a compact spare tire from a 94+ Cobra.

Check this site out it has assloads of info on the brake conversion.

What can I say

I found a killer deal on one when I bought my Cobra brakes. I looked around and they are freakin spendy and hard to find.

I guess you could get a regular spare and if the flat is in the front take a rear tire off, replace that with the spare and put the rear tire in the front.
