I just installed a 3G alt off a 98 mustang V6 this past weekend. I could not find a proper fuse or fuse-able link in town. I went to a car stereo shop to buy a fuse and it was $13 for a 150 amp fuse and $24 for the fuse holder. Over priced stereo crap. So, for now, I have run 4g wire from the alt to the starter solenoid with no fuse. Is this dangerous?
The dude at the stereo shop said you normally don't fuse an alt and if you do, the alt can fry when the fuse blows.
I know the 2G had a fuse-able link. I wired a voltmeter to the battery and have it sitting in my passenger seat for now just to keep an eye on things.
How important is it to fuse this line?
Thanks.
P.S. When I first drove it after the upgrade, it was charging at 14.9 volts. Is this because the battery was low. It's been 14.0 - 14.6 ever since. At what voltage do I need to worry about overcharging.
