Quick belt question for those who have deleted smog!

I got a quick question, does the belt move much at all on the tensioner when u rev it? When i say move like slide towards the front of the car like it wants to jump off....but doesnt.

Trying to eliminate all the bugs and not sure if this is a bug or is how it should be. I cant remember since its been so long since i had the car running.....

My 91 coupe would do that when I deleted the smog pump and used a short belt, but it never came off. By the way, I am in the process of doing this to my 94 gt, what length belt are you running?

Mine doesn't move at all.

My belt is a Gates K060888 IIRC.

if u go with a smog delete pulley...you don't need to change the belt...

I wanna say it was a 89.5" belt. I remember I had to try a couple in the auto parts parking lot. Yeah, I get a little tensioner click every once in awhile...annoying.

Well mine is a 89.5" now but the tensioner isnt between those two marks. A 88.7" was wayy to tight for me to put on myself. They didnt have a 89". Im gonna try the 88.7" later with a buddy or maybe just wait for a 89". I think to be cost effective ill wait to squeeze on the 88.7".


Also it depends on your pulley setup, like im running the stock alternator with an underdrive crank and water pump. Thats probably why u see the variance in lengths....

I've got the same pulley setup as you and also the same belt sizes/problems.

I'm about to yank my pullies to replace them with the stuff from the Vortech kit so no worries about making it stretch.

Did u try running a smaller belt? Will u actually be running a vortech or just using the pulley setup?

I ended up falling between belt sizes like you did. One of them was just baaarely too tight to get on myself. I bet if it let it sit in the sun for a while I could make it over the pullies and then it would stretch, like all new belts do, once I ran the car.

I am putting on an S-trim and getting rid of the two underdrives I run now, so I'm sure that will put me back to a normal sized belt.

There is a website for a store that is located here in Baton Rouge that sells drive belts EXCLUSIVELY - if you'd like, I can dig up the link. I'm sure they could find you whatever you wanted.

Blow dryer works well. It's really only tough to get the belt on the first time. Mine went from too darn tight, to stretching and losing HALF it's tension on the tensioner. Crazy belts.

Do u focus on the part u're stretching over the pulley or do u hit the whole belt?

oh and which pulley do u guys find is easiest to get the belt around....i've been using the power steering pulley cause i can use a screw driver on the bracket for leverage....

I actually used my flood light. Just held it up next to the light as I spun the belt around. Had the belt stretched between my foot on the floor and my hand held around the area of my neck/face. I used my arm force to help give it a pre-stretch. I NEVER use a screw driver on my belts. Good way to tear one.

I put the belt on and leave it going over the idler pulley. My idler has no rib edge. I pull the tensioner then slide it down and force it on the other side of the idler pulley. I slide the belt on. Then release, and I checked to make sure it would stay and bumped the starter. Once it's on there. Starting the car, it'll instantly stretch. It's definitely nice to have a friend help the first time. I did put it on myself though. Again no screwdriver. After I run it a bit, I can put the belt on by myself with no problems at all.
