Quick clutch job question!!!!

In the middle of a clutch replacement. Pilot bearing and rear main seal have been relpaced. Flywheel has been resurfaced. Just about to put it on when I decided to read my Haynes Manual. Here is a little quote from it:

" - be sure to mark the relationship of the pressure plate to the flywheel, if marks don't already exist...The marks are usually an X, an O or a white letter."

Does the pressure have to be balanced with the flywheel? The flywheel has already been resurfaced and I can't find any marks on the pressure plate.

Is this very critical? I have helped friends replace two other 5.0 clutches with no attention to this detail.

I think that it will only line up one way but im not 100% positive. Check and see. Also if you look at the back of it you may still be able to see the marks where it was lined up before.

Are you talking about the flywheel or the pressure plate? I know the flywheel will only go on one way. I am wondering about the pressure plate to flywheel relationship.

Oh sorry... i didnt fully comprehend what you were talking about. The pressure plate is a balanced assy in its self if I recall right. Look at the new pressure plate and it prolly has balance weights on it......When you get a motor balanced they balance it with the flywheel and balancer on it. Just bolt it on and go youll be fine.

When I did mine I installed a new flywheel and clutch from Spec. There was no mention of it being balanced to the flywheel.The flywheel is balance to the crank (50oz for the 302 and 25 for a 351 I believe) and as such can only be mounted one way. The clutch will slide onto the dowel pins and I think you can rotate it 1/3 of the way around each time. If it needed to be balanced to the flywheel, the dowel pins would be set up so it could only be installed one way.

I think you will be fine just bolting it up.

often in manuals, they outline things for when components will be reused. it is common to mark the components if you are removing them and then going to REUSE them. with new stuff, it should not matter. i doubt people mark stuff even when they reuse it.

im not real sure if that is what they meant, but it is my guess. good luck.

I think hissin hit the nail on the head - if putting the stocker back on - mark before removing and put it back the same way. With a new one and resurfaced flywheel - just bolt 'er up and go.

Give this man a cookie! Since you are replacing it don't worry about it. The only thing I could think of is that there are dowel pin holes and bolt holes but you'll figure it out. Pressure plate tq is 19-27ft'lbs.
