quick heatercore hose question please!

Hey guys, I bypassed my heater core not too long ago, just connected the two hoses with a fitting. I saw latley that it was kinda leaking through the fitting so i tightened the clamps. Yesterday i was driving, smelt coolant bad, temp went way up to the red and when i pull in my driveway smoke was coming out of the hood. Definatly the 5/8 hose split in half. I have the hoses off now, I want to just buy a half circle hose and connect them with just one hose so it dosent happen again. But in the bigger hose there is a small metal thing. Im not sure what it is, do i need that? or can i just run a normal hose to connect the two lines, need answer quick please! thanks.

Will it be alright to put the 5/8 size hose on the 3/4 if i make the clamp tight enough? thanks.

The metal thing is the heater core inlet restrictor. It's purpose is to reduce the coolant pressure inside the heater core at high engine rpm, and extend the life of the core. Keep it. New heater core hoses don't come with it, and you'll want to have it if/when you replace your heater core. It's a $16 - $20 part, believe it or not.

I bought a new inlet hose from Ford when I replaced my heater core about 4 months ago.

It already had the flow restrictor installed in the hose.

You are correct. The OEM, Ford hoses do have the inlet restrictor.
