quick speedo gear question

my buddy is having some 3.73's installed on his '96 GT this coming week. anyways, he's getting a tune in a couple weeks so he'd rather use a cheap fix like a speedo gear to fix his speedometer. so what speed gear would he need?

What is the stock rearend gears now? You'll have to pull the speedo gear and count and count the teeth on the gear. Ford uses different colored speedo gears as you increase and decrease gear tooth number. He's a link that should help www.therangerstation.com , I used this info when I swoped gears in my Mazda B4000 pickup. I believe the part numbers are the same for all ford tranmissions. The manual and auto tranny have different part numbers. I started out with a 17 tooth gear and ended up with a 19 tooth gear after the gear change. Let me know if you have anymore questions. he's got 2.73's on right now.

he's got 2.73's on right now.

That about a 27% change in gear ratio. He will need a speedo gear with 27%
more teeth from the origianl gear. Pearl02
