I've been working on the vert for the past couple days putting a new clutch in. I've done it before, but this time the tranny had trouble sliding in the last inch or so. I know this has been posted before, to have someone push the pedal in and it will slide the rest of the way, but that only helped it about a half-inch, and from there it wouldn't budge. Well my stupid frustration and impatience prevailed over reason and common sense, so I used the "suck-in" method with the bolts to force the tranny up to the bellhousing. I put the whole car back together before I realized that what I had done was a no-no. Now, I know I probably messed something up and am going to end up ripping the whole thing apart again tomorrow. Fortunately I haven't driven it yet. So I guess my question is...how likely is it that I may have pushed the pilot bearing out of place or something? When I was putting the transmission back in, I remember not being able to pull it back out once it was a half-inch from the bellhousing, so I just bolted it in. Anyway, let me know what I should do.

Been there and Done that... It didn't seem to hurt anything. If you used a good quality made in USA pilot bearing , you don't have anything to worry about.

I drove over 70K miles before the cheap chinese pilot bearing I used came apart. I don't believe that the way I put the trans in had anything to do with it, just a poor quality bearing.

Thanks for the reply. I just got done dropping the tranny again, only to find that everything looks okay . I was kinda hoping that I'd find a problem. The pilot bearing seems to be in place and there was grease on the very tip of the imput shaft where it went into the bearing, so that's got to mean everything is fine, right? Is there anything else I should worry about while the tranny is out again?

Alright everything is in and it seems to drive alright.

The following is normal clutch chatter, though, right?:

There's jerking engaging into a gear, especially higher gears at low speeds. Say I'm in 3rd gear at about 25mph, and give it some gas...there is fairly violent jerking from the drivetrain. That'll fade with time, correct? I don't remember if I had this issue last time, but I just want to make sure.
