Quietest free flowing Fox Exhaust???

Well....

A good number of you know already that I run a Bassani Quiet Thunder exhaust system. Top notch quality, all stainless steel, and had an awesome tone when I had the stock block etc.

The new motor combo however... It's starting to get on my nerves a bit. I also now have a nice (not) drone when leveled off the gas at around 2100 RPM. Regardless of RPM, the whole sleeper effect goes bye bye when the motor starts.

I think I'd like to have something that's a bit more demure. Something that doesn't sound like a Winston Cup car at cruise but also doesn't choke performance. I could care less what it sounds like at WOT... it can be as loud as it wants to then.

Hooker Max Flow I believe. They are NOT the Aerochambers, as they are a straight thru muffler, but for some reason were quiet as can be on my dads 91. Like amazing quiet, definately the quietest straight thru muffler, and a good chance it is only louder than a Super Turbo muffler.

It's a shame that a chambered style muffler is really going to hurt HP....

BULLETS get my vote

The bassani's really are one of the most mellow sounding mufflers I have ever used that are fairly quiet down low.. I used a set of Borla Pro XS on a 408, pretty damn quiet down low, loud up top.

Borla! Now that's a brand I think I could go for. I'd like something that's towards the top of the quality range.

What do you think Rick? Can I run a 3 inch. header back and still be near stock decible levels?

Maybe a turbo muffler would be the trick? They're usually pretty quiet but have to flow well enough for a turbo setup. I would say look into getting a set of stock '05+ mufflers...they're super quiet and i've heard that any exhaust upgrades on those cars are purely for sound.

i have the turbo mufflers...its actually louder then my dads car with the bullets. but i think thats becase right now mine are dumped...

Borla Pro XS is the quietest muffler ever!!!!!!! But sounds good too, i had em on my 94 with H/C/I and off road x-pipe and could not believe how quiet it was...like it had cats!!!!!!so now i have the quiet thunder

For a while I ran my catted H with Super Turbo mufflers.
A slight amount of drone, but damn it was quiet...

Even at WOT and 5K rpm it was still quiet. I hated it. lol

If you have an offroad pipe on the car, put a catted bassani x on there.
It will quiet the car alot, and make all the tree huggers happy.

I believe there was also a dynomax kit that was pretty quiet.

I had Borlas on my 89 and they were a little quieter than the stocks untill you punched it. No drone eaither. Nice deep burble.

Super Turbo muffs, cats and tailpipes... nothing is quieter. I have use them on both my single turbo and Incon mustang(TW heads, E-cam), damn thing sounds stock.... Robs me a little horses, but I don't mind.

I had(yrs ago) offroad h-pipe and 2 chamber flowmasters dumped and the thing sounded like race car, even at idle.

Right now, I have a Bassani catted X and Quiet Thunder cat back coming off of a set of Anderson 1 3/4 shorties. I like the tone and everything when I'm hard on the gas, it sounds awesome... it's the cruising part that's driving me nuts.

I had the borla turbo xl or xs mufflers (forget the exact name) even without cats they are pretty quiet. Still make noise and probably have the best tone of any muffler, but they arnt annoying at all. Gonna cost ya some $$$ though heh. I have tons of videos of them on my car.

If the drone is what's bothering you, don't even mess with any of the chambered mufflers of any brand/type. Chambers = drone, PERIOD. The Super Turbos I had on mine droned with and without cats ahead of 'em, even though they were generally the quietest darned things I've ever heard on a 'Stang.

I'd have to second the recommendation for Hooker Max Flow muffs. Had 'em on several cars of mine in the past; mellow burble at idle, ZERO drone at any RPM, very sedate and civil in cruising/regular acceleration, but they magickally open up at WOT and just roar. Beautiful things, they are.

Dynomax Ultra Flows would be a very similar alternative, since the design is nearly identical (plus they have a stainless version available), but they're more pricey and just a hair louder from the decibel tests I've seen posted before.

So the difference then is mainly the arrangement of the tubes inside of the muffler? Straight through = no Drone while offset = drone?

I guess I hadn't given the whole thing much thought until recently. The stock motor had no drone but this motor... and it's right at low cruise RPM. I put it up on a lift this afternoon after work. Both sides of the axle humps were touching the frame. I loosened things up and got it away from the frame but it still makes contact with the upper control arms (it's one or the other unless I have someone cut and weld them). It seemed to quiet down a little but it still drones at 1800 to roughly 2300 RPM.

Question: I do not have the exhaust tip inserts installed (I've tried before but couldn't get them to seat all the way in). They're supposed to take a couple of decibles from the exhaust but I'm not sure that they'll help with the drone at all. Anybody know for certain?

Thanks to all that have given suggestions so far. I really hate to get rid of my Bassani but streetability is my top priority with this car. I'm slowly nailing down details one at a time. I may even one day integrate a cup holder so that it looks OEM!!!!! (I can hear all the Oooooo's and Ahhhhhhhhs from the Fox crowd now).
