Raced an '01 vette! Question

I just raced an '01 Vette auto that a friend of mine owns and it was very close. I got the jump, but when we hit the concrete in the intersection my engine completely shut down for a second or two, he passed me, then it kicked back in. I was going probably 10 or 15 mph. I actually caught back up with him and at 85 his nose was 7 feet in front of mine. Mine is an auto too and I was wondering if it could've been a break in traction on the concrete that shut it down? I didn't turn t/c off. I took it immediately after to a back road and did a launch with t/c on and the backend came around then took off but never shut down? I don't understand what happened? I launched at about 2000 rpm in the race and about 2500 rpm on the backroad.

Really I think he was just toying with you. Your GT is no match for and LS1 Vette (unless his car is seriously messed up).

I know this guy really good and we've been bragging about our cars. Trust me he wasn't going to lay off any. I just want to know why my car shut down for a second or two.

Were you shifting 'manually'?
What RPM were you at when it shut off?
Did you get any wheel hop before the shut off?

Sounds like you either bumped the rev limiter or the TCS kicked in.

what is the rev limiter and when does it kick in? i had something similar happen when i was pulling out of a toll booth and trying to thread back into traffic. it seemed to happen up close to top of the range . . .

Yes when you hit the concrete it surely was alittle rough which gave you some wheel hop. Therefore the T/C kicked in. Probably happened to The Vette as well.
But still no match for an LS1 Vette.

When you're talkin cars with this much power the driver has ALOT to do with it. I've got a friend with an '03 ZO6 that I've toasted from a dead stop, twice. His problem is he thinks he can drive so he kills the TC and then spends the first 300ft layin rubber while I'm kickin his a$$.
P.S. How the haities do you bump the rev limiter with an auto?

Dont matter. The Vette is an auto. Unless his tires are bald, its not that easy to lay down much rubber. He will hook and then, bye bye, see yeah.

I think I probably hit the concrete and the wheels bounced, revved the motor, and activated the tcs. Can it just shut down the motor completely for a second like that though?

edit: I just talked to the guy I raced. He said he couldn't believe I pulled him off the start, then he saw me slow down and thought I must've run with the tcs off and broke traction. I told him I thought it was the traction control kicking in. He ran with tcs on also but didn't have any problems. He was amazed at how fast the "new mustang" is and said he's been thinking about getting one, even more so now.

Your traction control can kick in without tripping the rev limiter and thats probably what happened. If you ever plan to race your vehicle turn TC off or you will notice this bog quite often.

Yes. You completely loose power. Its just like taking you foot off the gas for a second.

the 05 mustang's computer has a built in torque management program.....my dyno guy said he could modify the program and eliminate it. basically when you are beating on your car, the computer senses engine abuse and kicks the throttle back. (remember that we have drive by wire) then it thinks that everything is ok again and opens back up to W.O.T. i noticed that if i shift a few hundred RPM less than i did before, i dont get the torque management system on my case. i have not yet been on the drag strip yet, so i dont know the best RPM to shift at yet, but i know that if i shift a little sooner, then i dont bog down.....my car is a manual trans, i dont know if the autos have the same problem or not, but it sounds like it... :notnice:

A standard Vette with 350hp runs low-mid 13's so it's very possible for an 05+ Stang to win.

having had 3 and a current o5 GT mustang there is about a .2 to .5 difference in a perfect world but in the real world with the way a c5 can get traction and the gears you will only win it the driver has a slow re acation time. I always think its funny how Mustang owners, firebird owers always aspire to beat a vette. trust me they are good cars for speed & cornering but they are not that great. The vette is a image thing just like owning a harley davidson. I like my o5 stang better than any vette I have ever owned. It's the looks that this car has over the vette.

That is, unless your Harley is a V-Rod! All show and ALL GO! 10.2 second 1/4mile... awesome handling, and amazing looks. It's the total package.

LOL... I think the standard stock Vette is in the high 12's (Not 13's).

Even Stock auto Trans Am's are running 13.2-13.5 which walks any GT.

Well yes. A stock 6 speed Vette runs high 12's. But we were talking Auto, which runs low 13's. Still womps a new stang.

When you said slow you really mean the Vette driver has to be sleeping. An image thing? Thats why you got a Stang? Same thing. But the Vette has the total package.

What year Vettes did you own to like the Stang better?

Oh yeah, my 88 GT is WAY better than my 05 Ferrari.

Dude, just SHUT YOUR MOUTH already.

You know NOTHING.

Compare a FOX body or a SN95 to a VETTE and YES it will get SMOKED.

Compare a low-mid 13 second 05 to a low-mid 13 second Vette and its comparable.

So now please shut up.
