rack and pinion different on 90 and up than 89 and lower?

I keep looking up rack and pinions b/c I need to replace mine in my 88. Did the 90 and up years ome with something different?perhaps better? if so would it be better to get one of those instead of a stock one? ALso, do they have to have a fluid cooler on the front? My friends 92 notch didnt. should he have one?

i dont know about the year specific stuff. but
you have seen the "PS cooler" - do you think it does anything? i would not worry about scrapping it. if you are worried, run a good one. for simplicity, maybe run syn fluid in it and dont sweat it. (or if you are just asking for your friend, i would not worry about lacking one).

Kewl, thanks. I run synthetic in mine but didnt know if it was in important for the cooler.

I just put a reman one in my car. There are Ford design and TRW design, sport steering and not. Mine was ford design with the pressure port on the bottm and return above. I think TRW ports are side by side. Plus mine is sport steering. Look and see which one you have. Ford has a little Ford embossed oval on the drivers side.

Well, I want a ford designed one, I called napa and they had both. Would it matter if I put the ford one on? And I thought all 5.0 mustangs were 2.5 turns side to side, mine is a 2.25 .... thought it was weird. the 2.25 is a little more expensive but not so much that I actually care. Which brand would be better? I always thought it better to keep to the manufactures brand.

as said, there are a few options. ford and TRW each have standard and sport. the 88 GT vert has the sport package, based on info from the door sticker. so i cleaned up the rack to find the part number and maker (it was on the left back side of the rack, under the input shaft). sport ford rack was what i had. i dont know about interchangability, though.
the ratios are not too far off, from standard to sport.
i dont know more; just sharing experience. and you knew all of this, anyhow. good luck.

Can I swap a 2.25 turn ratio for a 2.5??? cost difference is about $120, I have the 2.25 and I dont think it would make that much difference to switch to a 2.25
