Radar detectors

I'm just wondering where you guys put yours. I want to put mine in between the roof and the rear view mirror, but I'm concerned the dots on the windshield (with the pony) wont allow the radar detector to function effectively.
Does anyone have theirs in that spot? If so how well does it work?

I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for, thanks.

Don't worry about the dots, I have mine mouted there and it works fine, also the dots help hide it so people can't see it from the outside unless they are looking for it. Run your power wire up along the top of the headliner and down behind the A pillar to your fuse box. Good Luck

I have my radar detector mounted on top of the mirror. The radar won't be affected, but you will get less laser detection.

My V1 detected laser with no problem with the dots in the way, but I'm not sure how other radar detectors will work.

Interesting, I'll have to keep that in mind. I have a Beltronics (cheaper unit, not the good one) so I'm not sure how good it will be. Maybe I'll try something else.
Thanks

Me too, I have it permanently mounted on top of the mirror. It turns on by itself with the engine, using the remote kit from escort.
You can see it on the picture...knowing where to look for... :)

Thanks for the replies.
I went out and messed with it for a while and I was able to mount it to the rear view mirror like 00s281sc368 did but more towards the edge of the mirror.
I was able to attach it in a way where it sits right under the dots on the windshield.

:nice:

Now I just need to hardwire it in.

Im pretty sure where you mount it won't affect the radar too much as long as you didnt get it at WalMart for like 60 bucks. I always mounted mine right in the middle of the windshield just cuz i wanted it to be straight and level and catch every damn cop.

I was worried about that too, and have my X50 on the passenger side side visor. This way it "sees" through the more open part of the windshield just past the dots.

I mounted my V1 right in front of the steering wheel about two inches above the dash. This way it can't be seen by people who will want to follow you when they see you have a radar detector. You won't forget to turn it on if it's right in front of your eyes either. Also it's quick to remove if you do get hit with instant on radar. You DO NOT want the cop to see a radar detector in your winshield after you get stopped for speeding.

Not to hijack the thread here but where can I go to figure out how to hard wire my radar detector? I hate having that damn thing plugged in my cigg lighter all the time..is it hard or easy to do?

I also have mine mounted jsut 2 inches or so above the dash and it works VERY well there..Only gave like 60 bucks or so at circuit city for this cheap little cobra but it picks up as good as my GF's 130 dollar cobra and kills my buddies whistler hands down :)

I used these instruction to hard wire my V1. Skip the steps for the remote display if you don't have one. Install was pretty easy......took about 30 minutes being pretty careful.

Edit - if you don't have a V1 you will need to figure out the electrical attachments on your own (not too hard) and ignore things specific to the V1, but power/ground sources can be the same.

I would recommend mounting a radar detector high and in the middle to allow the best "views". Being higher it will "see" more in general, plus through other vehicles glass ahead and behind of you as well. You will also want the detector to "see" well to the rear if you have rear detection, so don't mount it in front of you or the passenger seat.

I wish I had a V1 but I don't... I just did a few 850 mile trips and used mine each time. I have mine mounted an inch below the rear view mirror. I picked up on 10 cops in one trip before they picked up on me and I was averaging 95 mph.

according to escort, you should mount it as low as possible if the cops use laser in your area. laser uses a small beam and most cops aim it at the front bumper. so if you have it high it may miss the laser.

that being said i still mount mine by the mirror. i cant stand it low on the dash

I believe when you get aimed from a cuple hundred feet away, whether its just above your dash or higher under (or above) the mirror makes no difference at that distance... The beam lights up the whole car anyway!

For hardwire moutings, Escort has a great kit for 30 bucks :nice: . Don't know about other brands
