Well, was driving to the store tonight (luckily it's really cool, about 60) and had the defroster on one below max. As I was driving along, I smelled something odd coming from the vents, but thought it was from outside, so I just turned the defroster off.

Pulled into the parking lot, and still smelled it.. thought that was odd, but then some noisy little 4 banger pulled out and I thought it was him... Back from the store, start driving home, and smell it AGAIN.. I finally have the sense to pull over and check.

Smoke is coming from the radiator fan :[ It's really dead looking. I wait for it to cool down, and unplug it. Tape it to the body so it doesnt get stuck in the belt and drive home...

Boring story, I know... sorry.

My question: I havent had a chance to look at the fan assembly before. Can I get away with only replacing the motor? I've been browsing Autozone, and they seem to sell the motor alone, as well as the entire assembly.

Could anything else have been damaged, or should I be OK with only replacing the fan motor?

I'd check it out myself, but it's dark outside, and might as well get all your experienced opinions!

Thanks guys!

really good thing I checked here first. I called Ford, and my car has 3 recalls on it. One for the circuit breaker, one for the hand brake and one for the hood "at low impact collisions"

I'm taking the car in to the dealership now, hopefully they can fit me in today.. otherwise it's Monday.

Mine didn't take a crap until "after" they did the recall. Thus, I bought an aftermarket fan

same here! My car took a **** on me one day due to that fan recal... DO NOT GET IT! I was lucky to be next to a dive shop that had a hose I could use to fill my radiator back up and drive home later on.

Well, the fan is already dead, so there's not much harm they can do to it.

True. Would be good for getting a new fan out of the deal.
