Radio Installation Pics wanted

Before we get started I'd like to stay away from the "To cut or not to cut" dash debates if I could. This post is mostly aimed at those people that have cut their dashes already or received a car with a cut dash. I value everyone's opinion on the subject however.

I'm looking for pictures of a finished radio installation and perhaps a small explanation on how you arrived at said installation.

A little background on my car and situation. I own a 66 Mustang 289 Coupe, nothing rare but I love the car and have recently taken on a major restoration project that kind of snowballed on me. I put the car in the body shop to get quarter panels and paint, well the ball started rolling from there. He cuts the quarter panels off and suggests I replace the trunk drop offs and outer wheel wells... I bought those and got a great deal on a rear glass for the car (the PO sand blasted the one in the car). So I decided while he has the glass out to replace that and the headliner... Well it snowballed into full floor pans, doors, fenders, front and rear valances...you get the idea . Anyway the body guy has had my car for almost 3 months and it's coming along. It's hard to be without something that you love working on for so long without coming up with more and more things you want to do with it. I've decided on upgrading the stereo considering it doesn't have one. I've bought everything I am going to use now but would like to see how everyone else has done it.

I worked into the price of the paint job all the interior visible metal pieces (doors, dash, rear wheel covers).

Anyway, I'm not looking to keep the car stock, I've already moved far enough away from that to worry about the dash. So please post up some pictures of what you have done and maybe a small blurb on how you made it look clean.

My car came with a HUGE hole from an old 8 track player in the dash.

I installed a full din unit on the lower half so it would fit flush on the dash and not go through the little recessed area in the dash. Then modifyied a shelby delete plate to cover the top of the old 8 track hole

Doing it this way worked for me, but it does delete a fuctional ashtray because of the way the radio sits, but I like it.

I'll get you some Pictures of my deck, i put it under the dash, and so far it has worked for me, and it draws less attention that if it were in the dash because most people don't see it from outside the car ( which i like )

There's my dash. The only two reasons I can think of not to put it there would be theft issues and originality issues...which can be two MAJOR issues I guess depending upon your goals and where you live. I live in a small town and the car was already far from stock, so I chose the dash out of ease of use and best sound. Can change CDs easy and don't have to use vendors like Custom Audiosound, which I'm yet to hear any good feedback on. I did a little "write up" here

I used that tool where the bit spins really fast. I cant put my finger on the name, starts with an R. First i made an outline useing the the peice that the radio sits in. Then used that tool to cut it out. BTW, I think Virginia Classic Mustang sells dashes made to put new radios in.

mine

i used a dremel tool to cut it. i went thru about 100million discs but its easy to control. i think if i had my cordless sawzall back then i would have used that to make the horizontal cuts.

i removed the dashpad and head slicer (dashpad support). then filled the blemishes and painted it to match my platinum gray stripes with basecoat clearcoat.
