Made a trip to the JY today for some ranger axles...pinion pin lock bolts are giving me trouble.........

What size is the stupid little lock bolt?? I thought it was 5/16, but all of my 5/16 wrenches strip the bolt heads. I used a cresent wrench and was successful in twisting the head off of one. I am going back to the JY tomorrow to get these damn axles. What's the easiest way to get this stupid ass bolt out??? It should be so frickin easy, but for some reason I am hung up on this point...............thx

I thought 5/16 to, but not sure now. Go armed with a full wrench set. Don't use a socket, as a socket won't go on fully and may break the bolt off inside.

also, the aerostar (pass side) axles are a little more common, same thing.

I went and bought some craftsman 6 point wrenches and got those bolts out real easy.

The axles all seemed to have some play in the horizontal direction <----->

shoud I let that worry me??? All of them were like that. thx

Every axle i have messed around with had horzontal play.

Also, i found sometimes it's easier to break stubborn bolts by impacting them. I put the wrench on it and then give the wrench a good whack with another long wrench. The blow usually breaks the bolt loose 99% of the time.
