1988 LX already has flows, oem H pipe, UD pulleys on the crank and waterpump, 65mm TB, 1.72 roller rockers, 1 5/8" shorties, 70mm SN95 MAS.

I found an Edelbrock Performer intake and I was looking at either Edelbrock Performer heads or AFR 165's (only a $175 difference at Jeg's) and the OEM speed density cam. I have no track aspirations for the car and want it to be a well mannered, 20+MPG (already does 24MPG highway with 3.08s) road weapon. I'm trying to avoid a cam swap unless it will really do big things and retain the drivability factor.

What am I looking at with this combo? Do I need 24lb injectors? Will I need a tune (the instructions with the Edelbrock heads don't mention this). Horsepower estimates?

Thanks!

88' Stang would be speed density, unless it's a California car. Without mass air, the addition of heads and intake would cause driveability problems, except at WOT. Same with the cam change. Need to convert to mass air, or go with a stand alone system to do any mods like you are looking at. Opps, just saw the sn 95 mass, disregard above statement. Go with the AFR heads.

I upgraded to the Ford Racing MAS conversion back in 1990 so I am running mass air at this point with a 70mm SN95 meter.

Any guesses on power? Drivability?

On power with AFR 165 and performer intake? I'm not sure with a speed density cam not do i know the specs on it, but if you had a regular mass air, stock 5.0 cam you'd probably be around 250-270 rwhp. Add a nice cam and you'd be at 285+ rwhp. Step up to 24# injectors. Driveabilty will be fine with the stock cam. Step up to a more radical cam and you'll have some braking power problems, possibly idle problems without a nice tune.

I only mentioned speed density cam since it is currently the OEM cam for my 1988, as you know originally a speed density car. I read that the speed density cam was a little more aggressive than the later mass air cams.

What cam would you recommend for a daily driver with aspirations of 280 - 290 rwhp? I don't want to work around the cam as far as drivability and loss of low end torque. I haven't driven a cammed car so I am trying to figure this all out.

Incorrect....head and intake swap, along with any other bolt-ons, have no negative effect on SD performance. Problems occur when a cam selected is not compatable with the SD perameters....remember SD is VAC dependant so SD freindly cams would be required...and there are quite a few nice selections.

I ran SD with every bolt on available for yrs...it was my desire for a more aggressive cam that persuaded me to change to mass air....don't fear SD it's a very reliable and poplular method.

In an attempt to realign this thread, my car has been converted to mass air but still has the cam from it's speed density days.

I would also like to know the power to be had from this because i have this same combo of parts except for x heads, and the cam retarted 4 deg. I was thinking like around 270 for mine, with a good tune or more?

No can do. I live in MA and although they won't be putting my 1988 on the sniffer during next year 's inspection they will reject me if there aren't any cats under there.
