rattle at 1900 rpm?

ive got this really odd noise coming from what seems to be the bottom of the car, directly underneath the (A4) gearshift. its like a rattley oddness.

there is also a rattle coming from my timing chain cover, it sounds almost like the chain is hitting it, but i cant seem to figure out why.

any thoughts on either? thanks folks.

if this is a 2.3 u speek of than there is no chain, its a belt, check your belt tentioner, mine was worn out and it sounded like an engine knock, cant help you with the trany noise exept to say get rid of the a4ld. just my 2cents.

The noise coming from under your car could be a cat heat shield.

I've actually got the same thing going on with mine. However, I have a t5 and the rattle is at around 1700-1800 rpm. I'll check the cat heat shield though. But why would it only rattle at a certain rpm?

ill take a look @ the cat, thanks. i guess it would only make the noise @ a certain rpm because that happens to be the point at which the engine vibrates in a way that moves the thing around, or clanks it against something else.

id get rid of the a4 if i could. i had an 88 with a t5. :-(. i miss it.

Yeah it's something having to do with harmonic frequencies...on my old '90 the cat heat shield would make a loud ringing noise right around 3000 rpm. I stuck a big screwdriver under it and pried it off.

yea i had the same problem and it was the cat cover i ripped it off when i changed my tranny i have a 2.3l lx 1993
