Rattling Noise Occurs @ 50%+ Throttle

i think it's clock wise to advance, i say think because after working on old fords and chevy's i just rotate it which ever way till it advances or retards, you'll know it, when it's retarding the engine will slow...
you'll know it if yout get a timing lite on their, retarding will bring it closer to the tdc mark on the balancer..or on the blancer i think it's a 0 with a long mark

yea just put a mark (white out works good) on 10degrees on the balancer and put the light to it (with the spout out) and line the mark up with the pointer, if you want say 11 degrees move the pointer over a line, for 12 degrees, line the mark on the balancer 2 lines off, i forget which way though. And use the side with the more numbers, it goes to i think 30 on one side and like 10 on the other.

there is a small wire in the distributor area, it has a small fuse sized grey plug in it. this plug must be removed before setting the timing, other wise the timing dances all over the place when your using the light.
it's really very simple, just harder to explain....
here's a picture of the spout connector, it's the small grey plug on the end of the wires to the rightof the photo

if it's doing it thats not good but, usually getting decent wires and having them routed properly solves that problem. alot of people run those ford motorsport wires, thats whats on mine as well, they look nice and work well enough.

Well I reset the timing... I think its at 11* Advanced. Numbers were hard to read. But it was left of 10* by a hair.

Car runs fine now. No detonation... Im thinking they had it set to something like 20*+ in advanced timing... :(

Unless you are holding out on us and you're in the circus, left of 10* would be 8-9* probably. :nice:

Did you notice where you started out to see how advanced it was before?

In any case, that is right in the ball park and now you can fine tune for your chosen octane.

Good luck.

Yes, I posted that it was right around 20*+ in advanced timing...
Sorry, I thought you were making a guestimate about that. The puter will advance the base timing to around 20* from 10* (10* set with the SPOUT out), so that was just a tad high.

Glad you got it fixed.
