In an effort to try to verify that the sound I'm hearing is in fact, the infamous clunk everyone seems to talk about, I'd like to know if it occurs damn near every time you load or unload the drivetrain?
Don't really notice it unless the top is up, even more so with the windows up too.
So basically, you hear it twice between shifts. Once after you press the clutch, and once as you let it out. Could it be the rear moving?
Is this what everyone talks about? If so, is there a cure for it? If not, what does it sound like to you guys?

Yes, yes, and yes. The Terminator has some really sloppy, clunky, slacky, drivetrain components.

Some things that MAY help your issue are MM or Steeda diff bushings (all three), 14mm bolts to replace the 12 mm ones and subframe bushings. They all have a bit of compliance and the diff bushings seem to get eaten up quickly. The rest of the slop is in the trans and again in the diff. The trans is not fixable but the rear could be enhanced by having the gears spaced correctly.... thats not the right word, tighter or closer to dead center spec.

I guess I need to get this car in the air and go over it myself. I know what gear and/or drivetrain lash feels and sounds like. My '03 GT had plenty of that. This is different. Really sounds more like something loose shifting around. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the input.

An IRS equipped car inherently has more moving parts than a straight axle therefore more areas for driveline slack. I went from an '02 GT to an '03 Cobra and I actually took the new Cobra into the service dept. within the first week of ownership because I thought there was something wrong because of the "clunk" I felt when getting on & off the gas. Was told it was completely normal on the IRS equipped Cobra. Come to find out it was and is when the car is in stock form.

Anyone ever look at the slip yoke on the driveshaft? I've seen this kind of clunking noise caused by a binding slip yoke. I guess I really do need to get under this car and see what's up.
Wouldn't be the first time I had to correct an issue that an OEM felt was "normal". Maybe I can figure something on this car too. We'll see.

my 97 cobra was clunking the same as you describe i checked it out and found the brackets for trans cross over to frame came loose
