Can you use the stock main-cap studs again? They aren't one-time, torque to yeild are they? How much power will they hold? In a couple weeks, after my forged rotating assembly arrives, I'm having the the Cobra aluminum short block assembled. If I'm pushing 650HP at the fly, do I need to go ahead and get ARP main bolts? This block is the 01 Cobra Teksid which compared to the earleir Teksids has larger main caps, stronger bolts and eliminated jacking-screws.

I only ask because $400 for a set of bolts sounds pretty stupid, but if I have to have them...I have to have them.

Aaah, well crap. I could have looked in my Haynes to answer my own question. Thanks, Kilgore.

Lets see... at least 8 bolts right? 8 / 380 = nearly $50.00 per bolt. Better be some pretty good bolts. :D

You should look in the Haynes manual, there is a lot of stuff about proper removal and installation of the crank in there... Seems extremely complex to me.

Oh, I won't be doing it myself. I just want to try to get as many of the parts as I can for my engine builder to save them time and me from too many surprise-costs.

If you can't already tell, I have very limited knowledge of building engines. The block is out in my garage wrapped in plastic, and without going and looking at it, I couldn't tell you how many main caps there are that hold the crank, haha. I'm motor-stupid when it comes to having to put together an engine. I have so many questions about it. If I read the Haynes, I might learn a few things...

I've never rebuilt an engine, besides a lawn mower engine in high school.

I pulled my 4.6, stripped it down, had everything re-surfaced etc., and so far it is all together waiting for heads still at the moment.

its all very straight forward, and quite easy just using the haynes manual to guide me through. I realize the cobra motor is a little different, but still seems simple.

it all makes alot more sense to me than those old 5.0 pushrod motors. I never understood those, but then I never tried to do anything to the one I had.

and yes the main cap bolts are tty. so are the head bolts. and the haynes manual says the rod cap bolts are tty but everyone here said they can be re-used up to 3 times.

I went right to the ford dealer for the main cap bolts, as I could not find them from arp or any online stores. cost was ~ $107 ~

Definately ARP, call an engine builder, one of the ones I told you about and see if they sell the main stud kit, might be around $200

oh here's one http://www.vtengines.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&manufacturers_id=16&products_id=155

Thanks, Tom. I totally forgot to check VT's site. MMR's ARP mainstud kit for aluminum blocks is $380.00... Maybe I'm not reading something right. $200 from VT sounds like a better deal. I'm ordering a windage tray from them anyways.
