? re: wobbling balancers???

I just some confirmation or denial that this story is
A guy I know is selling his whole "drag truck" setup (13 second build)
according to him, you'd need to get a fuildamper, as aparently, "the new rebuilt internals and reciprocating assembly is SO light that it keeps causing the stock balancer to tear the front seal and then the balancer ends up wobbling around. To me, it sounds like AT LEAST the crank, if not the ENTIRE reciprocating assembly, would at hat point be screwed and/or permanantly damaged, or there is a MUCH bigger problem here. I didn't want to call to his face, but I'm pretty sure it is.
It would seem it's only logic, no?

Fluid damper ain't fixing that. It's probably too loose from too much machining.

Jay, i have seen it where the balancer or crank needed machining for the balancer to fit right. Subsequently the engine got torn up, and they ended up getting a new crank.

so either way, it would not be a case of getting "just" a new balancer...

From the way you made it sound in the opening post this has happened a couple of times. To tear apart a balancer it either needs to be the wrong balance, or just old.
So the first one i can understand, the second suggests there is a real problem.
But as i said, it may take a real expect to physcially inspect it.
It this an engine you are considering buying? If so, i wouldn't dare.

stock balancers will come apart after a while of high rpm abuse. (my experience with more than one of them )

it's an engine that is for sale, but I;ve always been weary of the idea due to the shady balancer situation. Plus, he's trying to unoad it dirt cheap...

Last time I checked, the seal doesnt stabilize the crank. You could remove the front crank seal and the crank would maintain the exact same relative rotational pathway (and the balancer would spin true as the crank continues to spin true).

Maybe I misunderstood.

I don't think I understand. Is the rubber isolator being destroyed or is the damper actually rotating in relation to the crank? Either way I think he didn't properly balance the rotating assy, before he started hitting the high revs. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause such an issue. The stuff about being "so light weight" is either ignorance or bs. Then again I have been known to be wrong on more than one ocassion.

No, Jason, I think both you, hissin, and everybody else in this thread have been right. I think the kid is either stupid, lying or both, and is hoping I'll take the problem off his hands like an idiot.
To be honest, I don't know what the hell it's actually "doing", as the kid kind of talks in circles and doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about either....
