So I was really bored yesterday and decided to play "mechanic" on my Cobra and wanted to pull the passenger side valve cover off so I could fix the ticking noise I hear when the car is cold and ofcourse had no clue what I was getting into much less what the hell I was looking for anyway after I pulled the stru tower brace then the intake pipe then the t-body, plug wires, fuel lines, heater core line and some vacuume lines I was able to get that oversized valve cover off which leads to me not knowing you cant reuse the gasket and will also have to replace the sprak plug hole seals which sucks so $70 and a trip to Napa and that was solved but here I am staring at the cams on my 4.6 wondering what am I looking for:shrug: I did not see or feel any play on anything and the rollers on all the rockers felt fine no slop or play and the thing that really got me was how clean the inside of the head was, it was all silver with no crud buildup inside:nice: so after reassembling a second time, the first time I tried to reuse the gasket:mad: it ate up like 5 hours of my Saturday and made me vow to only take her to a mechanic for internal stuff because it still has the noise and I am out $70:bang: oh well at least I did not acomplish anything:D

And the purpose of this post is:shrug: I was bored and did not want to use punctuation:D

Punctuation is important. Capitalization and punctuation is the difference between, "Helping your uncle jack off a horse" and "Helping your uncle Jack, off a horse"

for what it's worth...

I had the start-up ticking issue too (185,000 miles what do you expect ;) )...anyway at the last oil change after I got the car up on the ramps, I added a quart of ATF (but didn't overfill it) and ran it for a few minutes...then changed the oil and now the noise is gone :D

I also changed from Castrol dino-oil to semi-synth, so that may have something to do with it too (and before anybody says anything, I tried Motocraft semi-synth and it made it worse)

So did you just drain a quart of oil and add the ATF and then do the oil change?
What kind of Castrol Semi, 10w30 or 5w30?

What does the ATF do?

I've got a little leak around the oil filter adaptor so it sorta drains for me :bang:

if your oil is topped off, you'll have to drain a little out...

I'm not certain what about the ATF makes it work as a motor flush and why it works so well unsticking lifters, but it does...it's just something that was pretty common back in the 70's when I was getting started messing with cars ;)

I used Castro Syntec Blend 5w-30
