Hello everyone,

I have a 92 GT project and I am stuck with a 4 lug to 5 lug budget decession. I was wondering if the 2001 GT rear axle would work in the 92. Other than the modifications that would have to be made to the brakes. would it be a direct fit? and function properly. Any advice or suggestions wolud be much appricieated. Thank you.

The suspension mounting points are identical, but you still have to worry about the wider track width, in addition to the brake lines.

Does the inch or so make a big diference? Will it rub on the wheel well. I have never got to involved with axels prior to this project.

It's 1.5" EACH side, 3" overall.

It all depends on your wheel selection if this will be an issue for you. Typically most people use 94-98 axles which are 3/4" wider each side and with 9" or wider wheels, they have probs

Thank you for responding I.m looking to go with the 17 inch black bullit rims. My friend has the rear to the 2001 mustang gt, and front spindles from a 94, to convert my 92 to a 5 lug. the car is alreay lowered 2 inch.

You would have to use 05+ wheels to make it work right, and then use a spacer on the front or get a different backspacing (SN95 wheels) on the fronts.

Another thing, the lower control arm bolts are a different size. Ford changed from 12mm to 14mm in 99. If you use the earlier LCAs, you will have some slop and not have a tight fit with the 12mm bolts. Or if you use the later ones, you will have to drill out your front mounts to use the larger bolts for a tight fit. Or you can make a hybrid LCA, 12mm bushings on the front, and 14mm bushings on the rear.

Personally, unless you needed a new 8.8 housing for some reason, I would just get the brakes and brackets from the 01 and use some 94-98 axles on your Fox housing and then you can run regular 17x8 wheels with no problem. And there are also options to run Ranger axles and those brakes with 9" wheels too.

Have you read Matt's brake conversion 5 lug website at 87-93 Mustang 5.0 Brake upgrade pages. Improve your 60-0 times! for all the conversion options?

To the OP Ihave tried all the wheel combos...

....I put a 2001 axle in my fox body. 3 wheel options, here's a break down:

1.) 17X8 +30mm offset fit, do not stick out past the edge, but they look goofy because they sit outward to far, there is no meat under the car.

PIC:

2.) 17X8 +45mm offset (that is a 05+ Mustang wheel) They do not stick out, in fact, they sit inward 15mm from the 17X8 +30mm offset wheel, and look pretty good.

PIC: (Pay attention to the wheel in the pic, NOT the tire. That's a 235-55 Tire.)

3) 17X9 +45mm offset (05+ wheel again, from American Muslce.) They do not stick out, but they sit right at the edge, and the extra 21mm you get, is all under the car. You get more meat under the car. You will need to make sure you have enough room to clear this combo. I made bump stops on each frame rail that hit the axle tube 1" before the tire would have hit the quarter. I also had to ROLL THE FENDER LIPS!!

PIC:

A BIG NO-NO is a 17X9 with a +24mm offset. PIC:

Thanks guys! Yeah I have alot to think about. I'm trying to do this with as little pain and cash as possible. I think I need to come to the realization that there is going to pain or outpour of cash, I just have to decide which one I'd rather give up. Since the economy is tight I.m thinking to invest in alot of Tylenol.
