I think the toughest part is getting the cable to release from the backing plate and the other location under the car. If memory serves me right you can use a 1/2" closed end wrench on the backing plate connections and then a 1/2" socket on the ones under the car. Yup, found a good video on the ones under the car:

Timing was good here. I pulled my axle this morning and used that slick trick. Works fantastic!

I think I found the issue. Was able to get the drum off and looks like the cylinder is leaking.

Make sure the axle seals are not either the issue or contributing as well.

Axle seals looked good. Can I replace the cylinder without removing the brake shoes completely? Can I just remove the primary and secondary springs to spread open the shoes enough to remove the cylinder?

Your gonna want to replace the brake shoes due to fluid contamination.

Gotcha. Looking on Rock Auto for the drums. They have two options, 9" on auto and 10" on manual. I thought they were all 9" drums. Can anyone confirm the stock size on a 1990 GT with a T5 trans?

Also, looking at this kit if it's good to go.

You can just measure your existing drums to answer that question.

Most all drums I have dealt with have the max-run-out cast on the drum, that's the drum size.

True, I was just trying to order the parts asap. Plus, I have always thought the stock rear drums were 9". I'll have to wait till I can get back to the garage and measure them.

Would you guys recommend replacing the springs and other hardware as well or just use what is already there?

I already answered this question in post 4.

I generally assume folks are working on cars they intend to keep for themselves and family.

Are you going to do both sides???
Only remove and install one side at a time so you can look at the other side to help you figure out where all the springs and things go..
Smaller shoe goes forward.....
do not throw any of the Old springs and things away until you compare them with the new spring kit... Make sure all of items in it are correct.. Sometimes you have to reuse a couple of items

Yup, doing both sides. Thanks for the advice. Not gonna lie, all the springs don't look like fun but I need to get it done.
