I am looking to replace my 4:56 9" Locker with something a little more tame.
I was wondering what year rear end assemblies will fit on a 1966 Mustang Coupe? I am sure that this has been asked before, but the search engine keeps failing. Can anybody advise?

You can use any 9" carrier out of any vehicle you can find one in if you are simply looking for an open carrier. If by tamer you simply mean the gear ratio and not the locker then just replacing your gears would be the easiest. You can find 3.50 gears in salvage yards quite easily if you look in older 6 cylinder vans, at least that is what I have always found 3.50 gears in when I wanted them.

Thanks for the info. I am looking to dump the 4:56 gears and the locker. I can still have a little fun with 3.50 gears and still drive on the highway.
The locker is a problem for city driving regardless of the gear ratio. If I were only going to drag the car... I'd leave the gearing alone.

Do you think I can alleviate the poor highway performance with the 4:56 gears if I were to replace the C4 with a AOD?

An AOD and a set of 4.11 gears would be like having a 2.75 gear in the rear of a C-4 car because the AOD has an overdrive ratio of .67....one of the reasons overdrive is so damn nice.

So if I understand correctly, having an AOD trans and 4.56 gears would allow me to still have good low end take off and acceptable highway drivability?
I guess the next question is how to get rid of the spooled differential. Not sure I want to tackle either job. I have been told that changing the differential requires a press and other specialized tools to reseat the new differential in the pumpkin. Not sue if that is correct or not.
