Yes, it's already happening. The rear end is starting to make a popping noise when taking a corner. It sounds similar to a rock being thrown from the tire and hitting the car, but it happens around about ever corner. Is my rear end taking a s**t on me already? I guess it just couldn't take those clutch dumps at 2nd gear and the wheel hop sure isn't good on it. What do you think is going on?

Does the sound come from the right side or left when you hear it. I know it sounds like a stupid question but if it is the right side when you take a right turn u should jack the car up and check the wheel berrings also.

Jack up the back right side try to wiggle the tire I dont know if its worn out enough to tell but i had a wheel bearring go on me once and the how I found it. But i also had a dirfrent car make a simaler noise it was the shocks. How old are the shocks.

my rearend has been making very similar noises. On mine it happens when turning either way, and the sound always comes from the side that corresponds to the direction i'm turning (ie you turn right, the right rear wheel makes the popping noise). My shocks and the rearend itself are very new.

Is it an open, LSD, or locker?
I honeslty don't know. I leave two black marks with the right tire mark being a little darker than the left. So, either it's an open or a very worn out LSD. I do think it makes clicking noises when I am rolling it, which would indicate LSD.

It is an 8" rear that came out of a '66. It has 2.80 gears. Did Ford even offer 8", 2.80 geard rears with trac-lok?

Don't be bitter. LOL

I think your rear is a posi, because my old open never left two stripes, just one long one. My current one is an LSD as well.

One other thing I think it could be... to get it in, since its a narrowed truck rear and the Ubolts (even 9" specific ones) wouldn't fit around it, we had to bend them and edit the mounting plate to get them in. I guess theres a pretty good chance thats the issue...

Had a V6 Capri once that the diff started to make the noise you describe. When cornering the sun gears are rotating relative to the housing, mine had a few teeth missing here and there, the popping sound was the remaining teeth jumping.

If your problem is the same, time for a new diff... and yes, wheel hop will help cause this as it unloads and reloads the diff sending shocks through the entire driveline until eventually something breaks. Doing burnouts with only one tyre turning or with a big speed difference between the two wheels makes the sun gears rotate at a speed much higher than designed. This leads to overheating of the gears and eventually failure.
