Rear end noise.

I have a 1995 3.8 liter Mustang that has been making an odd noise that I cannot identify. It sounds to me like its comming from the rear end. It only starts making the noise after I have been driving it for a while...usually like 20 to 30 minutes, and mostly while accelerating, especially in 2nd gear. (Its a 5 speed manual, btw) I've had it into the shop and they were unable to hear the noise...I don't think they drove it long enough, it was in for a window repair and this wasn't their focus... Anyway, it is a low pitched squeal or whine. Its a metal on metal sort of sound, and it has me a little concerned. My instincts say something of a wheel bearing problem....but I'm not really a car guy....

Any ideas?

I'm having problems again. I think its my transmission again. T5's suck ass. I heard your exact symptoms before my first five speed tranny went out. Now I'm hearing them again, tonight to be exact when i was just going for a short drive. I would suggest going and gettiing your tranny checked out before one of your bearings goes out like mine did and demolish the whole thing. I'm taking mine back in a day or two to have it checked over while i have warranty. I hope i still do anyways..

If they don't run it jacked up with the rear off the ground, and use a stethescope, then they aren't looking for the noise correctly. I'm not kidding when I say a stethescope - all good shops have a mechanic's version of this.

I second the above post. I had my car into the shop for an intermittent throw out bearing noise and they had it in the air, running and went all over the back of the engine and entire length of the tranny with a steth.

They ended up replacing Pilot bushing, bearing and throw out. Didn't get a clutch out of the deal though - too bad.

It had squeaked like that from day one, but was so intermittent and I could never get the conditions right to have it happen when near the dealership until that day... One month shy of the cars second birthday. Coincidently this was the day I went to the track for the first time ever. Knowing it was going into the shop in a few days for them to "investigate further" inspired me to drive the crap out of it on my last run. Now I just have to lean to drive it smart and reduce the 60 foot.

Dry rotation or slight squeak sound from the rear of the car could be anything from the tranny to axle/wheel bearings. When is the last time you had them repacked? It could be rear end noise too.
