I am throuing some of my parts away(don't have many). I have a 67 (stripped and body repair finished) I6 converting to V8. Should I pitch the rear and just look for a entire 9" rear? I want the easiest path. What cars would be best to get the entire rear from? I am doing the V8 conversion because there was no engine as stated previously and really no engine parts period plus everything needs to be replaced anyway. I am basically starting from the ground up, everything will be just about new or used (restored) the only thing I am keeping is the rear glass and the door and quarter windows and mechanics. Everything else will be new.

but I need to know if I should just pitch the 8" rear and find a complete 9"

That's what I did. It makes it a lot easier. I do believe my 9 inch all came out of a 67 cougar. WELL WORTH IT. I got the housing, differential with 4.11s, and an AOD that runs for $550. Just look for deals!

Never just pitch anything! You can always sell or trade for something down the road. You might also need the 8" for setting up spring perches on the 9", if its not made for the Mustang.

unless you are going to make more than about 400hp(350 with slicks), the 8" rear will do just fine.

If I understand correctly you have an I6 now, that means you have a 7.5 not an 8. My advice is don't mess with a 9-inch unless you intend to have fairly serious power and traction (400+fwhp and slicks). An 8-inch will cost less to source than a 9, it weighs less and has less parasitic drag. Perfect even for a warmed up street stang.

If you try to trick out an 8 it will cost almost as much as a 9 similarly treated, but if you are talking about a stock axle assembly for your classic the 8s are CHEAP and plentiful.

well I don't care if I get a 8 or 9, the rear I have now is a 4 lug and I need 5 to match the front disk brakes I will be installing. And the 68 Gt rims. I have no use for a 4 lug axle.

would the best bet be to go to a mustang salvage yard (live near 4) and get a 5 lug rear from one of the cars there? Or what.

I am going to drop a 428 CJ, it will be a clone car.

If you're looking for an 8 inch I have one. It's the housing and gears. I'm not sure how good of condition it's in, but it worked well for me before I took it out. I think I actually have an extra set of 5 lug axles too. Just shoot me an email if you're interested. I live in KC.

If you're going to put that engine it there, you can forget the 8" option. Of course you know you'll be installing a completely new suspension, front and rear.

Well of course I am going to install a new suspension front an back, Like I stated numerous times, the car had just about nothing on it, all the suspension is completely worn and shot. I have already stripped it to bone fixed all the body work. quarters, wheel wells, engine bay, floor, firewall, trunk, cowl, etc. all done. Just save money right now. REMEMBER this is a ground up restoration. Everying will be new.

But I have limited space and wanted to know what to do about the 7.5, 4 lug rear axle, that I want a 8" or 9" 5 lug.

If you are going to be putting a 428 in the car I would look for a 9".

i agree with this opinion, go with the 9" rear with a big block.

which ever is easy to find I guess, this isnt' going to be a drag or street car, just a weekend driver show kind the 428 CJ put out around 335 to 400, depending on who you talk to. But did the 68.5 mustang come with a 9"?

The 8's are going to be easier to find. I have one if you want it. In my opinion you are wasting your time and money with anything other than a 9" behind a big block, show car or not. Based on the HP numbers you tossed out and what the discussed limits of the 8" rear are you would be right up there.

A 9 inch with a nodular center section. I believe they also came with staggered rear shocks and detroit locker as standard items with the 428.
