Ok. As I read through alot of posts, I occasionally see references to "31 spline", axles being welded, comments about doing high RPM launches being bad unless the rear end is upgraded, and some other statements I can't quite recall.

I need some clarification on what this is, why it's done, and what's required to do this upgrade. I have my gears and am ready to install them. If this option to upgrade my rear-end is reasonable (cost-wise) I might wait to install the gears! Can anyone help me out, here?!

if you're going to run slicks with 4.30's for example a rear end upgrade is highly recommended. thus the 31 spline axles. Looks like you have 3.73's already what do you think about going to? If you plan SC or nitrous oxide later on keep the 3.73's or 4.10's max. If you're not going to be launching at really high rpms there's really need to beef up the rear end.

Despite my wife's wishes (more like demands ) I WILL be adding a supercharger sometime in the near future. I really wasn't looking to upgrade my rear end (other than gears), but if it's reasonable in regard to cost (parts and labor), I'd consider it. I just don't have a clue what it requires for parts and installation. That's what I need explained.

REAR END: (Not Needed if not running Slicks)
*Ford 31 Spline Traction-Lok..... $189.99 www.gefracing.com
*Moser 31 Spline Axles.....$215 www.need-4-speed.com
*TA Performance Girdle.....$159 www.bbandtracing.com

there's what you need to get close to bullet proofing your rear end.
Now traction is a whole new story..

edit: only real bullet proof rear end is the 9inch rear end.

With those parts in, traction shouldnt be to big of an issue, I mean the rear end is now bullet proof . Throw some slicks, or at the least a good set of DR's, tach it up, and let her rip
How long your clutch will last after a few launches is another story

hey guys, what exactly does the track lok, and the performance girdle do? And with everything on that list can our cars can run slicks, without worry of breaking anything?

Thanks, man! That's what I was looking for. I've read a few posts on here from guys drag racin' on stock rubber or wider (non D/R's or slicks) tires that have tossed an axle. Since my rear tires are MUCH wider than stock, and I enjoy the occasional burnout or donut (no cop jokes, please ), I want to be sure the rear end is up to the abuse.

just some guy broke his axles because he was dumping his clutch over 4k. if you feather you should have no problems.

Oh yeah...what, if any, other parts are required along with the items you listed? Will the rebuild kit for a set of gears suffice or do I need something more? I'm assuming that the axles are a direct replacement to the factory ones, meaning the stock wheels/brakes will be able to bolt on without the need of adapters or anything, right?

Exactly right.. Your rebuild kit for the differential should be provided by the shop you're getting it installed from. When you do the rear end build up do it all at once. You'll save tons of cash.
