hey stangnetters!!! i know i can count on all of you guys to help me out with a question i have. i have a 67 stang coupe. this guy is selling me a 9" rear end out of a 1973 ranchero. he said from flange to flange its about 58". i know for a fact that 67 stang rear ends are 59.25". Do you guys see a problem if i swap over to that 9" rear end? and would it be a clean swap? or would i have to do anything else? would it be as easy as just taking my 8" and putting on this 9"? yes yes im a newb at this. SOMEONE SCHOOL ME.. thnx experts!!:hail2:

I think that rear end is for use with coil springs instead of leaf springs. I'm not sure if it is or not but if that is the case then you would have to weld on the spring perches in the right spots and I don't know if you would need to remove the coil spring mounts or not.

here is the information on Ford 9" rearends I have compiled...

All of the following has come from various sites:

These measurements are from flange to flange. Subtract 5" for bare housing length.

65-66 Mustang 57.25 inches
67-70 Mustang 59.25 inches
71-73 Mustang 61.25 inches
77-81 Versailles 58.50 inches
74 Maverick 8" 56.50 inches
75 Mustang II 8" 57.00 inches
67-73 Mustang, Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane 9" 59.25 inches to 61.25 inches
57-59 Ranchero and station wagon rears, 57.25 inches
66-77 Bronco 9", 58 inches
77-81 Granada/Versailles, 58 inches
67-71 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane, 59.25 inches
71-73 Mustang, 61.25 inches
64 Falcon 58 inches
67 Cougar 60 inches
67 Fairlane 63.50 inches (coil springs)
72 Ford Van 3/4 ton 68 inches
73-86 65.25 inches
57-59 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 iches (narrowest 9" housing)
66-77 Bronco 58 inches but has 5-on-5 1/2 inch diameter bolt circle
67-73 Torinos, Rancheros, Fairlanes 59.25 inches or 61.25 inches
67-71 Comets, Cougars, Fairlanes 59.25 inches

This list is from the StangNet stickies. It shows the 67-73 Rancheros 59.25" or 61.25". I'll bet the 73 Rancher has the 61.25". That's an inch on each side difference that you could get wheels with more backspacing to make it work. If it has leaf springs you'd better check that spacing because it is probably different.

72-up Torinos/Montegos (including Rancheros) have a 4-link coil-spring rear suspension. The brackets for attaching the suspension links are welded to the rear-end housing. To use this rear-end on an early Mustang these brackets need to be removed and leaf-spring mounting pads welded on.

ooo ok i see. alright. thanks for your guys help. i guess ill just keep looking around for 9" or just put some 3.73s in my 8". just a question how hard is it to swap gears on an 8" rear end? thanks.
