Rear gear help

Since it takes alot of rear gear to get a '66 289 movin, can anyone give me options or steps to take to getting better suspension for better torque?
P.S. IM NOT RICH!!, emphasis on the "steps" part.
P.P.S. The car is ABSOLUTELY Stock. I aint got nuthin cool but flowies and hi-po manifolds.

I'm a little confused by your question, are you asking which gears you should run and what suspension setup will work best for keeping the tires planted?

If that's what you're asking then i'll do my best. gearing is mostly about how low of a gear you can run before you find your freeway rpm unbearable. if you don't have overdrive (and since your car is stock, you don't) then your highest transmission gear is a 1:1 ratio.
Here's a formula to calculate your final RPM at a given speed.

[(Velocity(mph)*1056) / (Tire diameter * pi)] * (gear ratio) = engine RPM

Or gear ratio = (Engine RPM)/[(velocity * 1056)/(tire diameter * pi)]




Suspension will have more to do with how you plan on using the car than with which rear end gear ratio you choose.

With a C4 or a 4spd, somewhere around a 3.50 gear will give you nice acceleration plus good street manners.

I have the 3.5 gears already. but yah i was looking for the keepin the tires planted aspect of it. Also, about how to get goin a little faster by making the shifting of weight from the front to the back to the tires more efficiant....did i confuse anyone, let me know? Thanks for the info already given.
