Rear Gear

Anyone have any thoughts on a workable gear ratio for my 1969 Mustang. Car is a mild build 375 horse 351 Cleveland with a C6 auto trans and 14 inch tires and 9 inch rear end, the car will be a driver.

For daily use, you probably shouldn't go past 3.55:1.

I agree. Especially since you don't have OD, don't go more than 3.50 gears.

when you say daily driver, does this include a lot of freeway use, or not? if this car is a city car primarily, and will see limited freeway use, and you want some extra snap for the drag strip, then i agree, no more than a 3.50 gear. if you are going to drive the freeway on a regular basis, and still want some extra snap at the track, then go no more than a 3.25 gear.

I would say for city only driving I'd go with 3.89's though.

I ended up going with 3.44s as a compromise. Revs around 3200 at 65. If you want to drive any higher than that for an extended period on the highway - need to go with higher gears - 3.25 or stick with 3.0 you probably already have

Another more expensive option is to have a low gear kit put into the C6. It lowers first gear by 10% and 2nd gear by 5%. This effective turns 3.25 rear gears into 3.58 gears in first and still gives you 1:1 in 3rd gear.

Also, you really should consider a 2500 stall converter for that 351C. Really helps to launch the car.
