wilbraham, ma
alright guys, i took my car out for the first time yesterday and already developed a new problem. i was only gone for like 5 mins. in the car when it started to smoke a little bit. when i noticed it i quickly brough her home to have a look. under the car there's stuff all over the passenger side cat, and that's what's burning off (white smoke). moreso, when i put my new wheels on earlier in the day, i noticed 2 little puddles of what smelled like gear oil (way too pungent to be motor oil). also, when the car cooled down i was able to look under there a little bit and could see a drip forming on the tranny. now, i don't know much about this, but does it sound like a rear main seal? or is it something else? i'd like to try and get whatever it is fixed today, so i can take my baby out tonight for a little pace setting. any help is appreciated, so thanks in advance.

it seems like your talking about two different things. Gear oil would only be located in the rear end, not in the tranny. More so, when the Rear Main leaks, it leaks oil not trans fluid. So it would be oil leaking. not gear oil....

this is under the assumption u have a T5, but still a rear main would not cause the trans to leak

well the leak is up by the cats, so i assume it must be coming from there, as yesterday i could see a drip forming. maybe it was oil, it just seemed to have a very pungent smell. i'm not really sure what the problem is to be honest, that's why i came to good 'ol stangnet. i have very little experience, so i'm just trying to learn and fix up my baby... at any rate, any ideas as to what my problem might be then? it is definately a leak from the tail end of the tranny, practically right between the cats.

edit: it is a stock tranny.

i just checked the troubleshooting section of my haynes manual... came up with defective transmission rear oil seal... does that sound about right? if so, i just have to disconnect the driveshaft and change the seal correct?

edit: should i go pick up the seal? i found a dealer that has one, and i really want to have this problem fixed by tonight so i can take her out again. c'mon stanger's, help a brother out. :nice:
