I'm in the middle of putting the boot on my automatic, but can't figure out how to get the knob back on. I've got the main knob, the button to push in to change gears, and the spring that flew out when we pulled the knob off. Where does the spring go, and how does the button stay in place? I can't see any way of it locking itself. I know I'm missing something stupid, so help me out.

I should add, it's a 2001 GT. I have it now where the boot is on, the white button is visible and i can move gears by clicking that down, but for the life of me cannot figure out how to get the knob onto that and have the button on the knob push down the lever and let me switch gears.

Flip the handle over and look into it. You should see a slot where the spring will fit and, with the spring in place, the black pushbutton will stay out. Basically, the black button when pushed forces a wedge to force the white button down. The spring puts the wedge back out of the way of the white button.

Here's a bad sketch: button-pipe-wedge where the pipe holds the spring...

(ignore the periods -- they're needed to get the vertical bars lined up)

Do you see it?

You probably know but there is a tiny Allen screw on the knob at 12 o'clock as you look at the top of the plastic handle and down the shifter shaft. Don't forget to plug the OD wire back in!

HTH,

Chris

Thanks, I just figured it out today that the white part was too far down, and all I had to do was pull it up and it works.
