Rematch Encounter with LS1

This story kind of goes back to April right after I got my Heads/Cam done. I raced a friend’s 2002 WS6 with Gears/Cat-back/Lid and a few other simple bolt-ons on the street. He had gone a best of 13.0 @ 108 in this car. We went from every conceivable speed (including a dig) and he beat me each time, and while I did hang in somewhat close, he pulled me in each gear and I was very disappointed. A month later I got my car on the dyno and found out my A/F ratio was over 16:1 and I was down about 35rwhp. I fixed all that and desperately wanted my rematch with him but unfortunately, he had already torn his motor down for a new combo and I never got the chance.

In the meantime, I’ve raced many other LS1’s at the track and beat most of them, but most were pretty much stock and I never really knew the person I was going against.

Fast forward to earlier this week. A guy I know who is on my softball team bought a 2000 WS6 at the beginning of this year. Before this he had a 97 WS6 LT1 car for many years. He knows how to drive a 6spd well and is an engineer, so he’s in too cars quite a bit. He has the following mods done to his LS1: Hooker Longtubes, Hi-Flow catted Y-pipe, Borla Cat-back, Granatelli MAF, K&N filter (not a lid). I believe that’s it. Has 3.42 gears and everything else the ram-air TA’s come with.

I viewed this car as almost the twin of my friend’s car that I never got the rematch with. Only difference is my buddy’s car had 4.10 gears and stock headers/y-pipe whereas this car has stock gears but longtubes and y-pipe. All summer long I’ve wanted to run him, but it had never worked out. Finally, here at the very end of summer…we bump into each other and get the perfect opportunity.

I’ll admit I was cocky and knowing he was on street tires to my drag radials, I let him get the jump out of the hole….mistake. He had a great launch somehow and immediately jumped out a car on me. I spun hard in first, caught traction a little at the top and then nailed 2nd. As I’m pulling through 2nd, I kept expecting my car to reel him in, but there I was…stuck about 6 feet off his rear bumper neither gaining or losing ground…I started getting nervous. As I hit 3rd, I thought I’d be in trouble, but once 3rd started winding out, the first movement from any car appeared as I started slowing inching back on his rear bumper. Once I hit 4th, I knew I had the momentum and was pulling him in pretty good….I came up on his door mid way through 4th and that was where he thought it’d be good to shut it down.

I was immediately pissed as the first thought that went through my head was I should never have given him the jump. I really thought I could pull him down low too, but that was not the case. We stopped afterwards and talked for awhile. I was afraid he’d be bragging since he was ahead most of the race and we’d been sh * t talking quite a bit through the whole summer about our cars. I immediately offered “good race” where the first thing that came out of his mouth was “Yeah…it was….but you were coming up on me hard at the end”. That made me feel good as I knew he realized that if we stayed in it, I would have passed him had I wound out 4th. I know had we gone from an even roll too, I would’ve most likely pulled him. Looking back, I shouldn’t be pissed, but I shouldn’t of been cocky either…I won’t make that mistake with an LS1 again…they just have too much torque to try to make up ground when I’m already down in engine size.

Condensed Version:
I raced a slightly modded 2000 WS6 LS1…he jumped out a car and it took me until 4th gear to catch him

Good that you are learning about being cocky. Running a club site you see that a lot.... you get to see some make the mistake of getting mad and leaving... which usually shows where they are headed in life.

The ones that see they are "overboard" on the talking and settle down a bit... get the respect and turn out much better in the eyes of the community and friends.

Glad your headed down the right path.... good story too. :nice:

I was overly confident in an encounter I had with an LS1 Z28 last year. I was out in front of him in 3rd gear doing about 35mph, he pulled along side me and instead of going back for 2nd I just layed into it in 3rd, he downshifted and pulled me to where I was at his door... from there on I couldn't close the gap. It was a short race as we stopped as soon as I hit 4th due to an upcoming light. I won't make that mistake again!

Good job. These little 'ol 302's can run.

If you ever need to catch up to someone in first or second gear, DON'T LIFT! :)

When you say dont lift, do you mean power shift?

anyway, good story. Good to hear you reeled him in. If you would have launched with him then i think you would have clearly won. I see most stangs take camaros and trans-ams off the light but get brought back in a hurry.

I had the same encounter but opposite before my car broke. LS1 had "12." written on his rear window with shoe polish. Skinnies up front and massive rears on ZR1 rims. As I passed driving normal he pulled up to my passenger door and he downshifted to third (So did I). Since he couldn't hear the blower at that rpm he didn't know what hit him. As I pulled away I shut it down but it didn't sit well with him. So again he caught me and downshifted but same result. He caught me again, same result. Finally we slowed down to a light and he asked "What the hell?" I made sure the rpm's were up so he couldn't hear the blower. I said "Just bolt on's man!" He says "This car runs 12.2's." I say "Nice" and give him a thumbs up. So do you think he would just give up and leave me alone? Hell no, two more times, same result. He drove off freaked out and cursing up a storm.

Sure do.

I met up with an old aquaintance from high school at a stop light and he was driving this riced out N/A Accord. He never knew I had a Mustang since I didn't drive it to school and he started talking a big game at the light. I just said "put your money where your mouth is and go when you're ready." He didn't go.... :D

Who says I did lift? ;)

I have no doubts his LS1 is putting down 325rwhp/345rwtq based on similar combos. It does weigh a couple hundred pounds more than my car, but I was kindof riding high on my car and it was nice to be brought down, even though I still didn't really lose.

And far as letting him "jump", I still launched (more easy), but waited for him to hit it before I really layed into it. It's not like I stood there and waited for him to take off before I even tookmy foot off the clutch. Most times, an LS1 M6 car won't launch as good as he did and it would've been a good decision...I guess I underestimated him though.

If you want to keep being cocky(just kidding) and not spend much more cash, I only have one word for you...nitrous.
I knew the FTI combo would put my car in the 12's, but I wanted a little bit more for the LS1's in town so I picked up a Zex dry kit. You should at least consider it.
One of the guys in town has a HCI/bolt-ons 302 with a 125 wet shot and ran 11.64@121 a few months ago.
